My client needs advice from the ladies; (and men, too)

My client is going out to Georgetown, DC tomorrow night for a friend's birthday. It's a casual gathering, but at a club/bar that has a dress code, so he's going to dress up just a bit.

Now a year or two ago he bought a nice dress shirt, but when he got home, he realized it had french cuffs. He really hasn't had many opportunities to wear it and thought this might be a good one. So, is it acceptable if you are out for the night with decent shoes and slacks, and a french cuff shirt, with an open collar (no tie)? He'll most likely be wearing a jacket too, but that depends on the weather.

Honest advice is humbly being requested.

Thanks in advance!

Whatever your client is paying you is too much if you are coming here for consulting. I hope there is no line item in your bill for "research".

There is a line we cross when we go from "I will believe it when I see it" to "I will see it when I believe it".

Tell your client that a shirt with french cuffs should properly be worn with a tie and a jacket, even in casual situations. However, it is possible to pull off the open collar/no tie look, as long as it is accompanied with a blazer (double-breasted dark blue or black at this time of year), especially if there is a dress code; he can always take off the blazer as things "heat up" during the course of the evening. Going without a tie and jacket in my opinion looks a little sloppy (though alas, such inappropriately casual attire is becoming increasingly common), unless the climate is tropical.

This is the look you're going for (though as I said, a double-breasted blazer would work even better):

Civilisation, I vaguely realized then - and subsequent observation has confirmed the view - could not progress that way. It must have a greater guiding principle to survive. To treat it as a carcase off which each man tears as much as he can for himself, is to stand convicted a brute, fit for nothing better than a jungle existence, which is a death-struggle, leading nowhither. I did not believe that was the human destiny, for Man individually was sane and reasonable, only collectively a fool.

I hope the gunner of that Hun two-seater shot him clean, bullet to heart, and that his plane, on fire, fell like a meteor through the sky he loved. Since he had to end, I hope he ended so. But, oh, the waste! The loss!

Though few things surpass the Dress Ascot in manly elegance, the Day Ascot, such as that you have pictured, belongs either in '60's and '70's costume theme parties, or in your garage to clean the bird sh!t off of the fender of your Jag. I still remember with a shudder the time I walked into the bar of a yacht club only to be confronted by a roomful of men sporting colorful red ascots, white shirts and blue blazers; I thought I had accidentally stumbled onto a convention of Thurston J. Howell impersonators.

My client just tried it on and I must say that he did look dashing. It looks great with a jacket, although the jacket may come off as things heat up, as they say. Thanks for the advice, I'll be sure to pass it on!

I'm sure you will look great, maybe stuff a tie in your pocket/car in case the dress code requires it, but an open collar would be just fine, me thinks. Although I do live in lotus land ^_^ ; a dress shirt and jeans looks darn sexy to me. No tie, roll up the sleeves if it gets hot. :smokin:

No ascot though; yikes! :ph43r:

Well, straight up, I'd be asking your client if he's attempting to impress a particular female or attract any particular female on this given evening? In other words, what's on his agenda? Has he made any goals here?

If he's there trying to look hot for some special girl while on a date, he should wear this shirt with a tie, cuff links and a jacket. If he's there trying to stand out & apart from the group of guys he's with, he can choose to wear whatever he likes, BUT if I were to see him, he would not be making a good first impression on me. Does this make sense?

When a man wears cuff links, he should also have a money clip full of large bills. Shoes should be shined, and he should wear a serious expression, and order scotch on the rocks.

Nobody in Louisiana would be rude enough to tell you if they thought it was not appropriate attire.

Jeans look much better on women than on men. Notice the exquisite fit on this young lady.

I don't know about the rest of the country, but down here you really can't tell who has money by the way they dress. Sometimes, not by what they drive, either.

My mom and dad had a friend from Shreveport, and if you saw the lady, you'd have sworn she didn't have a pot to pee in or a window to toss it out of. A few years ago, the president of an ArkLaTex bank called her up and needed a favor...seemed the bank was on hard times because of a default from a major borrower, and could she please lend them enough money to keep the company solvent for 60 days?

She was happy to help them out...on her terms, of course....
