Bank insiders confirmed reports from the bank's staff association that Wolfowitz directed personnel officials to give Shaha Riza, his longtime companion, an automatic "outstanding" rating and the highest possible pay raises during an indefinite posting at the State Department, as well as a promotion upon her return to the bank.

Neither is he.

Quite the news. This is the same guy who rode into the World Bank claiming the key to helping developing countries was to stop corruption.

The FT called for his resignation this morning. WSJ had a piece defending him. Well, it doesn't really defend him, rather it attacks his critics.
In my defense, I was left unsupervised.

What was she on loan to the State Department for? I wonder if others who serve the public sector have similar arrangements.

Many things look a lot worse on the face than in context.

I don't see how, if the things the WaPo claims are true are, indeed true, Wolfowitz can maintain any credibility with regard to either his position in the World Bank, or with regard to the US government. I'm surprised that this took this long to get out.

I'm not blinded by anything, Mark, and your referral to party blindness is just ignorant. The type of arrangement I am speaking of crosses party lines and may not be uncommon vis a vis people who interrupt their carreer one place to serve in the public sector in some way.

I'm not defending or condemning anyone. All I am saying is one needs to know the context and 'The Rest of the Story' before rushing to judgement on the basis of sound bytes.

Apparently, the World Bank has confirmed that Wolfowitz signed off on her salary increase and promotion without a review by either the chairman or an ethics committee.

This, apparently, was not in accordance with explicit (although informal) guidance Wolfowitz had been given on how to handle such matters.

Quote:

The board said Wolfowitz had revealed his relationship with Riza while he was negotiating his own job contract and, at the directors' request, sought guidance from the board's ethics committee.

"The guidance given on an informal basis was that the employee should be relocated to a position beyond potential supervising influence," the board said.

http://money.cnn.com/2007/04/13/news/inter....reut/index.htm?

Oh, and the World Bank's employee organization is calling on Wolfowitz to resign.

Quote:

"The president must acknowledge that his conduct has compromised the integrity and effectiveness of the World Bank Group and has destroyed the staff's trust in his leadership," according to written remarks presented at the meeting by staff association chair Alison Cave and obtained by Reuters.

"He must act honorably and resign," she said.

Cave said it seemed impossible for the institution, whose mission is to fight global poverty, to move forward "with any sense of purpose under the present leadership."

I can agree with that.

On the other hand, she looks pretty formidable. He may not have had a choice.

I don't see/hear any sound bites.

Just facts.

He should be terminated from his position, not "asked to resign".

Corruption charges should be filed and investigated fully.

People who work for any governmental entity regardless of political party or philosophy should be held to the highest standard when it comes to issues of corruption.

As the details of the Wolfowitz thing get out, it's not as bad as originally reported. Still bad, but not quite as bad.

Apparently, the promotion and the idea of a raise were discussed with the chairman of the ethics committee and with the bank's general counsel (if it's the same person, it's the one Wolfowitz brought in). But not the amount of the raise, which it has been alleged violates the bank's rules. And which was pretty substantial ... close to a 50% raise.

Also, there's this:

Quote:

In August 2005, for instance, Mr. Wolfowitz wrote a memo to the bank’s vice president for human resources in which he virtually dictated the kind of job Ms. Riza should be given. “I now direct you to agree to a proposal which includes the following terms and conditions,” Mr. Wolfowitz wrote. “You should accept immediately her offer to be detailed to an outside institution of her choosing while retaining bank salary and benefits.”

What kind of idiot leaves that sort of paper trail about his girlfriend??? I mean, really ... anybody with half a brain would have known that that would come back to bite him on the a@@.

What exactly is the difference between a neocon and a conservative? I don't have any "hidden agenda" by asking that; I am just curious to know.

No sarcasm, Mark -- I despise the leftists who got disillusioned with the socialist programs and embraced free market capitalism, but brought their same positivist ethics and worldview with them. A pox on their house.

(Klaus, the above is distinguished from classical conservatives, who come out of the old "liberal" tradition (natural law, Burke, subsidiarity, anti-authoritarian, etc) -- there was a thread here awhile ago that discussed the difference.
