Just another case of Joe Biden not making sure his brain is engaged before throwing his mouth into gear. I think he just lets it run because he likes the sound of it. |

Where's the outrage? Surely there must be outrage. No? Oh, that's right - he's a Democrat, so it COULDN'T be bigotry. I forgot. |

No problem...the story was just breaking when I started the thread: http://www.observer.com/20070205/20070205_...newsstory1.html Mr. Biden is equally skeptical—albeit in a slightly more backhanded way—about Mr. Obama. “I mean, you got the first mainstream African-American who is articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy,” he said. “I mean, that’s a storybook, man.” |

They are quoting him but they look like a liberal tabloid to me. Maybe they support "Hillary"? Who knows. If someone said something like this- they should be asked if they said it- so that they can confirm or deny they said it - and Barack Obama should be asked how he feels about it. Etc. Maybe this will develop into a bigger story (as you suggest). If he really said this (or even if he didn't) I can't imagine some other news outlet not picking up on it. I don't know why you would believe a liberal tabloid. fwiw- he has 0x chance of being elected. ![]() |

Daniel, you miss the point entirely. If a GOP congressman said this they would have had him labeled a klansman on the front page. |

And, he knows better...he ran directly against Jesse Jackson in the '88 dem. primary as one of the 7 dwarves. He was doing well until Dukakis's camp derailed him with the tape of a ripped off Neil Kinnock speech. Perhaps we'll be hearing from the Reverend's people soon? |

Strange how we are supposed to give certain opinions as a group as if were obligatory. I asked for confirmation that the quote was correct. My computer won't load the video, so it doesn't help. If he said it and he meant "clean" and not something else - the remarks were arguably tinged with racism but MAYBE NOT- maybe the comments were just disrespectful and rude. I don't think I am the right person to have an opinion before: 1. the comments are confirmed 2. they are clarified 3. Obama responds Nobody makes racist comments without other people noticing not least a US senator. So chill with your accusations of selective outrage. |

Try this link, Daniel. Perhaps we should play "WIARHSI?" You know: "What if a Republican Had Said It?" In today's game, let's imagine what would happen if a Republican presidential candidate had said that Barack Obama was the first "clean" and "articulate" African-American presidential candidate? * Which paper would be first to call for the Republican's withdrawal from the race: the NY Times, Boston Globe, WaPo, other? * How soon until Jesse Jackson, Carol Moseley-Braun and Al Sharpton turned up on TV to be asked how they felt about being insulted in this way? * How many hours of MSM musing over the GOP's "history of racial insensitivity"; how many replays of Trent Lott making his statement about Strom Thurmond, of George Allen's 'macaca' moment, etc., would we be subjected to over the ensuing week? * How long until the hapless Republican did indeed withdraw from the race? |

That's OK, Dan -- I appreciate that you're a fair minded liberal and want to give him the benefit of the doubt, make sure the quote is correct and in context, not jumping to conclusions, etc. Would that ALL liberals were like you, and extend the same courtesies to everyone on the other side of the political spectrum...

Well I mean really. You want us to be cautious and not emotional and when we are you get upset. We can't win with you! I think this story should play out- I do- so let it, that's all I'm saying. I could care less about Joe Biden. He is slightly more important to me than the grass I have to keep from growing up around my front step. |

I heard that Obama responded and said that he understood what Biden meant, no harm done. I somewhat agree with Biden on this...Obama is one of if not THE most promising black candidate for the presidency we've ever had. That doesn't make his comment any less foot-in-mouth, especially when it comes to politics. The point however, is that if a republican had said this, news media outlets would have had a collective orgasm. |
