She is actually my husband's aunt on his father's side. I only had the opportunity to meet her once when she attended a family wedding here in Minnesota. She had a very interesting life in Los Angeles. Here is her obituary listed in yesterday's paper. Jean Evensen Shaw Jean Evensen age 82, formerly of Minneapolis. Jean died peacefully on December 31, 2006, in Santa Monica, California. She is survived by her adored brother, Stuart Peter Evensen (Patricia) and sister, Caroline Evensen Lazo; nieces, Stephanie Lazo and Jean Wyka; nephews, Peter and Chip Lazo, Robert and David Evensen, and their families. She graduated from Northrop Collegiate School (The Blake School), Minneapolis, Pine Manor College, Boston, Mass., and Immaculate Heart College, Los Angeles, CA, and studied music with Leonard Bernstein and Aaron Copland at the Berkshire Music Festival, Tanglewood, Mass. A noted musician, Jean taught piano, wrote and lectured about music for more than 30 years. A private celebration will be held in Beverly Hills, California to honor her remarkable life. Not mentioned in the obituary (which would have been longer if they didn't charge $9.95 per line with 5 words being a line according to my Aunt Caroline) was that she had been married 3 times. Her first marriage to Jack Eisenberg, second husband was Charlie Russel the TV producer and third husband Lou Shaw also a well known TV producer. Jean was also the consulting music expert for the movie "The Competition" starring Amy Irving and Richard Dreyfus. (1980?) She taught them how to "fake it" to make the piano playing portions seem real in the movie. According to my Aunt Caroline (Jean's sister) she gave her beloved steinway to her favorite piano student. Since she had no children, many of her favorite items are being given out to her various piano students...many of which have been studying under her for years and years. I am going to ask my aunt Caroline to write a biography of Aunt Jean so we can have it as a keepsake to put in the family album. Aunt Caroline is a published author of many books so a biography should be no trouble at all for her to write! Anyway, just thought I would share this with ya'll. My only regret is that we never got a chance to really get to know her before she passed on other than through phone calls and cards in the mail. Her internment will be here in the Minneapolis area as she requested to be buried next to her parents. |

I'm sorry for your loss, fizzygirl. But it sounds like she was a woman who led a very full life, and was doing what she wanted. How good of her to pass on her piano to a student; sounds like a great lady.
