I like the term Jack Frost uses. He calls us all "pixel people."

Well, someone did hand him that term...

Not that I'm bitter or anything. ^_^

BTW Plays, your avatar was featured in the "Piano 300" exhibit at the Smithsonian a few years ago - did you see it, by any chance? It was a great exhibit.

Every day, millions upon millions of people log on to some form of forum, chat room, etc. On a large number of them the posters are barely literate, can't spell, can't string a coherent sentence together, can't use words with more than 3 syllables, and about as deep as they can go when discussing something is "Me too" - "not me" - and - "who dat?" .... They can't think for themselves, and they have absolutely no creativity or imagination in them, and no personality.

This forum is made up of educated individuals who have above average vocabularies, are intelligent, have personalities, are capable of discussing things in more depth than most, are creative, imaginative, and witty.

I am not the least bit embarrassed to talk about my internet friends, and I enjoy each and every one of you.

Yes, even you, sQuirt - you sour asshole.......... :D

I don't think so. "online forums" are a "natural" consequence of the mass availability of new communication technologies. WoW is another aspect of the same phenomenon.

may I recommend: Future Shock and The Third Wave

among other things, you'll find the ideea the as communication is easier and cheaper, people will create "virtual communities" based on shared interests/characteristics rather than geographical proximity.

Well Dewey, I hand you the credit for "pixel people" right now...and would have said so in the first place had I known.

Am I forgiven? Is ignorance a valid excuse?

As to the avatar and the exhibit, yes I attended with a friend from Canada. It was really interesting and we both enjoyed it very much. My mouse pad (pretty worn at this point) is the same as the Piano 300 photo within the photo I took of my friend:

I hang out on here, especially during the day when I'm at work. Then at night, I play WoW.  :ph43r:

I've always wanted to try WoW, but I'm currently addicted to Runescape and I spend way to many hours playing that! In addition, Runescape is cheaper.....only $5 a month! Guess I'm a tightwad.

Well, gee, I don't know...

I think that phrase came up in one of the very earliest conversations we were privileged to share with Jack, when he first joined us after hearing kathyk talk about all of these strange cyberpeople. Actually, I grant all ownership of the phrase to Mr. Frost; it's become one of his trademark lines. ^_^

Fascinationg commentary from everyone.

As a newbie who was just looking for some piano advice, I have a few observations. As a rule, everyone here writes remarkably well and is informed (maybe not well informed, but informed <_< ). I think it's an interesting sociological statement. Take ONE thing people have in commone (piano, music, or whatever) and you can probably tell a lot about that whole group of people. I'd be curious what else the group has in common (compared to the general population).

My friends and family worry about me. Once I actually get a piano, I think they expect me to stop checking "that piano forum." They'd worry about me for other reasons, though.

My problem is that I do work on the computer quite a bit, and often when I procrastinate and check my e-mails, I get the big goose egg in my e-mail account. Hmmm. Why is that? Here there is always something new to read and maybe respond to.

Besides, I need new material to write about every so often. Can I quote pixel people, please?

It took a while for Janet to accept that I had my piano for over a year and I was still on the forums, so I understand that one.

They'll get used to it.

Thirty years ago I joined mensa hoping to interact with people who would fit this description. It was an exercise in futility, as the majority of the local members were more interested in promoting themselves than in engaging in interesting conversation on a variety of topics.

This forum has exceeded any expectations I might have dreamt of back then.

I Owe It All To John D'Oh
One of the advantages of an internet forum is that it brings people with diverse viewpoints, diverse backgrounds, and diverse geography together.

You couldn't do that in real life.

You also couldn't have the sort of discussions in real life that we have here. Inevitably, at your typical cocktail party, those types of heated issues are avoided, and when tempers run hot the subject is changed. Here ... well, as Cole Porter said, anything goes.

And that's because, at a party, a scene ruins the party. Here, if there's a scene, people can just move to another thread.
It would be unwise to underestimate what large groups of ill-informed people acting together can achieve. -- John D'Oh, January 14, 2010.
