And anyone who thinks contributing to an internet forum is strange has had some seriously limited experiences.

That's exactly what i'msaying.

As an active memeber, i don't think it is weird.

But alot of people looking in on what i do and how i live my life would find it weird- having never been part of a forum before.

What do you mean by that?  Why would it be "sad" or "pathetic" or "odd"?

As it happens I don't tell too many people about TNCR either, but that's just because it leads to a very silly conversation.

Because of the isolation. The sitting alone for hours on end, every day, talking to people i have never met. It's like living a completely virtual life where you are disconnected from the real world.

I know if i told any of my friends about TNCR, they would agree (some that i have told already, do think its weird).

x

So, to clarify, it's your opinion that being by ones self is sad or pathetic? Also, it's not living a completely virtual life, because we aren't here 24/7. In fact, I almost never spend all of my energy on TNCR; I'm always doing something else while I'm on, checking it here and there.

Let me ask you something: would you think the same of someone who spends hours every day reading? Actually, reading is even more isolated because you're not interacting with anyone except yourself.

And anyone who thinks contributing to an internet forum is strange has had some seriously limited experiences.

A simple 'yes' would be sufficient. :wave2:
What do you mean "we", have you got a mouse in your pocket?

I hang out on here, especially during the day when I'm at work. Then at night, I play WoW.  :ph43r:

You know, i so badly want to discover what WoW is but i am terrified because i know as soon as i start playing, i will become completely addicted and not be able to quit. :ph43r:

Come on. Try it. You know you want to. :ph43r: :whome: :help:

People look at me very oddly when I talk about the Coffee Room.

But they love it when I show them various funny pictures and youtube videos that have been posted here.

Mark always thought I was crazy spending so much time here. But now he's come to appreciate it. Meeting JF and KK helped.

Now he'll say "go ask the Coffee Room about such and such" or "do your peeps in the Coffee Room know about...."

He has come to appreciate the fact that we're experts on just about everything.

There's a wealth of knowledge here and hardly a waste of time.

What fizzygirl said.
The chance to communicate with people from different walks of life, that I probably wouldn not get to know otherwise is really special. I don't mention it very often, just when I show someone an incredible astronomy pic  , pass on a particularly funny joke, or explain where I got the brilliant recipe for ribs.

Pathetic? Sad? No.
Should I have better things to do? Perhaps, but I'd probably throttle the judgemental so and so who told me so.
Getting to hear from other people one is likely never to meet, that's actually pretty exciting. Never much happened before the internet.
Imagine no internet. People would riot.

To immediate family, I'll talk about the "Coffee Roomers," and they know a dozen or so members specifically by screen name. To others, I'll just say, "I was talking to a friend of mine in Tierra del Fuego yesterday, and he said..." Most people are incredibly impressed at how far flung my friends apparently are around the country and the planet. I try to downplay the fact that I've never actually met most of them in person. ^_^

I tell people all the time about this place. Of course, I've been posting on forums for quite some time, and people already think I'm odd (my vice-principal/soon to be principal refers to me infront of the students and staff as "the tech geek"). My parents think it's totally normal, because while they don't do the bulletin board/forum thing, they do both belong to several email groups, which are similar in nature.

One of my best real-life friends was initially an on-line acquaintance who I met when I was planning my wedding and found an internet forum about it.

The way I look at it is I don't have TV, though I probably spend as much time on here as most people do watching the tube. But when I watch tv, I have a difficult time multi-tasking. Here, I can do work at the same time.

What is probably more odd is that I talk to my real-life friends online (yahoo messenger), but rarely see them. In fact, one lives within walking distance, but I haven't seen her live and in person since the first week of September. :o

If people think I'm weird or pathetic, so be it. They'd think I was weird anyway - this just gives them something to focus their suspicions on.

One of the coolest dynamics I like about this board, is how it's self-sustaining. You leave for an hour and you will come back to a bunch of new threads or at least posts that you can read and maybe respond to. It's kept alive by each of us doing our own little part. Man, I sound like a gay.

This is definitely a very interesting board - the variety of topics and knowledge is tremendous. I think I am more of a taker than a giver on this board, but from it, I have learned alot.

However, I dont think the members are a very good cross section of the world (on average, the members are smarter, better looking :), (those I have not seen, I am sure you are better than average looking!), etc. than the world at large), but everybody brings a unique personality and outlook which seem to make this board work.

:thumb: to all of you.

You and me both, sunshine. Big time for me.

Although one thing I do bring to this board is a reason for others to say, "Why wont that verbose, prolific, son of a  keep his mouth shut!?" :blah:

I was thinking the other day how neat it is watching people get older, more mature, hit those milestones (Crash ;) ), and seeing others become grandparents. We've seen so much here over the years. Good and sad. But we're all getting older here on these boards.

My family understands. Hubby (who lurks) wishes there were more babe pics posted (I'm serious). The son wishes there were more links to games & more jokes. People outside my family though? They think it's & I'm weird to be online. So what, I say! I'm in the Dol camp: I don't watch T.V. either.

But for me, I need little breaks & sabbaticals from here every now & then. This place furthers procrastination about my exercise & other work. That's not good. Posts are one thing, but PMs do take much thought & concentration from me. I put my heart into these. So I apologise when I don't sent off speedy PMs. I'll try to do better ... really. What makes it very real for me are those PMs, and the emails after all. Something quite special is meeting some of you & the phone calls now & then. Good people here!

:)
