Are we a bit pathetic?

HOLY CARP!!!
I know we have made really good friends here and enjoy the debates and fun of it, but some people (myself definitely included) do spend an awfull lot of time on here. Is that a bit sad? I mean, if an outsider looked in at my life and saw how much time i spent on here, sitting alone at my desk on an internet forum with people i have never met, would they think it a bit.... odd?

I think its' probably why i don't tell many of my friends about here. They'd think it was very weird that i spend so much time online with strangers (well, in a certain meaning, if you get what i mean)....

and the pie, right? If you didn't, you wouldn't be Larry. ^_^

Yeah, I think it's weird, too. Well, outsiders would think it to be weird.
And how are you today?

Well, I usually pass time at work by coming here. So dont feel too special. ;)

I dont think its very odd. We live in a new world, a flat world where communications with people all over the world is done just as easy if not faster than calling up a friend. Time spent here is an interactive hobby. Kinda like playing the piano, video games, reading a book, painting, or playing golf. Except it's not very physically strenuous, but you do learn a lot and that keeps your mind sharp! :thumb:

What do you mean by that? Why would it be "sad" or "pathetic" or "odd"?

As it happens I don't tell too many people about TNCR either, but that's just because it leads to a very silly conversation.
I cite irreconcilable differences.

Every now and then, I'll mention to someone in a conversation about "I have a friend in Chicago who..." or "in Arizona" or "on the West Coast", etc. Usually they dont ask questions. When I have to explain though, it's not too bad...but my close friends know about "that forum I post on". In fact that's how we got Aqua, Brett, and about a dozen of my sockies! :whome:

This is as close to quoting a real conversation as I can get:

"Hey, check out this awesome astronomy picture my friend Mark took."

"Oh wow, that's amazing! You said your friend Mark took it?"

"Yeah."

"This is someone you work with?"

"No, he's on this internet forum I'm on."

"Internet forum? What kind of internet forum?"

"Well.... I'm not sure. We just talk about... stuff. See, like these astronomy photos he posted."

"It's an astronomy forum?"

"No, not at all."

"Well what's the name?"

"The Coffee Room."

".....You joined a coffee forum?"

"*Sigh* Nono, the name is the coffee room, but it's not about coffee, or astronomy. The name has nothing to do with it."

"So what's it about then?!"

"..........look, I don't know. . . . . but Mark took the picture."
I cite irreconcilable differences.

Yup, I also have to explain my friendships here.

I think it is pretty unusual to form what we all have.

That's what I say when Mrs. D'Oh goes to church.

Because of the isolation. The sitting alone for hours on end, every day, talking to people i have never met. It's like living a completely virtual life where you are disconnected from the real world.

I know if i told any of my friends about TNCR, they would agree (some that i have told already, do think its weird).

I don't think it's pathetic at all. I enjoy getting a glimpse into other people's lives.....people I would never meet under normal circumstances. I even mention ya'll once in awhile to my husband who gets a kick out of listening about the latest debates/arguments etc. etc. etc. I really enjoy popping in from time to time to catch the latest topic of discussion or catch a few new photos. I think of you guys as my "extended family."

So, to clarify, it's your opinion that being by ones self is sad or pathetic? Also, it's not living a completely virtual life, because we aren't here 24/7. In fact, I almost never spend all of my energy on TNCR; I'm always doing something else while I'm on, checking it here and there.

Let me ask you something: would you think the same of someone who spends hours every day reading? Actually, reading is even more isolated because you're not interacting with anyone except yourself.

And anyone who thinks contributing to an internet forum is strange has had some seriously limited experiences.
I cite irreconcilable differences.
