HOLY CARP!!!

Are there any steps that need to be taken to get newly plugged in speakers to work, or should they just be plug and play? |

Depends on your sound card, but yes. Speakers generally don't plug in through USB ports, in my experience. I know there are some headphones that do ... but they have something equivalent to a sound card in their wiring, I think. |

Speakers can plug into the USB for power, but the sound would have to come from your headphone jack...if you dont have a separate audio out port. |

And I don't think Apple's just trying to be funny with that reply - most of these speaker systems for computers are self powered. You need to plug in the adapter to a 110v outlet, and then make sure the speaker jack is plugged into the audio out on your computer. The other trick, of course, is to ensure you have a sound card, that it's enabled, and that the volume function works ( wav, CD audio, master volume etc.) set to a normal level (not all the way down) and not muted. |

They are not USB. They are regular old computer speakers with a little round plug. My old computer speakers worked, so I am assuming my computer has a sound card. The speakers are plugged in. The speakers are on. |

yes, they should be plug-and-play. check volume control check control panel | sounds and multimedia | audio for the prefered hardware playback device (should be your sound card). check your media player for the selected output device (could be different than the prefered hardware set in control panel) if you have the old speakers, plug them in and see if the still work. if they do, the new ones might be defective. |

I crawled under the desk, to see if I had plugged them into the wrong hole. Somehow, I managed to not plug them in at all.

Don't feel bad, Riley. I spent an hour on the phone with my daughter last night trying to get her wireless network set up in her apartment, only to realize that she hadn't connected the router to the modem. |
