My mother will be 97 years old in July this year. She has been in real good health and still took care of herself. About a year ago my youngest brother moved in with her, just as a precaution, and she would fix his meals and take care of most of his laundry and things. Another sister would stop in during the day and help clean the (big) house, but mom took care of herself for the most part. The day after Christmas my brother left for work, but my sister didn't know he was working that day so she didn't stop in as usual. My daughter who was in from out of town stopped by around 11: 00 in the morning to see her grandmother and found her laying on the kitchen floor. She was awake but dazed, she had tripped on a rug while fixing her breakfast and had fallen. We got her to the hospital and had her checked out, she had broken her left shoulder and had taken a good bump on her head, but was ok to go home. At home she exhibited some confusion, but other than the pain from the shoulder and the awkwardness of the sling she did pretty good. As time passed though she seemed to get more confused, she lost her appetite and started having trouble going to the bathroom. By last Sunday she was in bed most of the time and lethargic. Monday morning we put her back in the hospital for tests and observation. They couldn't find anything wrong with her and she continued to deteriorate and by Friday she was sleeping all the time and was being fed by IV. Although her vitals all seemed ok, it was like she was in a coma. My sister told on Friday, a brother who was going out of town for a couple weeks that he should be prepared for the worse. My wife and I stopped in around 7:00 Friday evening, and my sister who was sitting with her said there was no change. As my wife and sister were chatting, I took a Rosary out of my pocket and twined it in her hands that were laying on her stomach. In a few minutes she was mumbling and stirring in bed, and then she opened her eyes and said she was hungry and had to go to the bathroom. Within an hour she was sitting up in bed watching a basketball game (she loves basketball). Saturday she was weak but eating on her own and going to the bathroom, in the bathroom. Last night I spent a couple hours with her and we watched another basketball game. The rosary was still in her hand. We think she will be coming home today. lb |
