X-ray.

You don't need to be a doc to read this one. Let your imagination run rampant. The worst you can imagine is not as bad as the truth..

Nothing is as effective as homeopathy.

I'd rather listen to an hour of Abba than an hour of The Beatles.

When I worked at the University, it was my misfortune to take care of these tragedies every 4th of July that I was on call. The victims were usually young, enthusiastic....and devastated.

Yep. What used to be the thumb is on the right side of the image. There's a remnant of the 4th finger, and most of the 5th left. All else is hamburger.

George, you know when you get a x-ray, what is all the white stuff that looks a bit 'cloudy'? It's kinda all over the picture...

That's the dressing. Other things that look cloudy are various "soft" tissues (not bone). The tech taking the picture can adjust the exposure to allow more or less of it be seen (though soft tissues are notoriously hard to see on x-ray). Think of a chest x-ray. The ribs and spine are usually "whiter" than the heart. The heart is fairly dense, compared to the lungs which are difficult to see (unless there's some pathology there).

In this particular film, it's been X-rayed through the bandages, so the white stuff you see is gauze. In most other X-rays, the white, cloudy parts are usually either shadows or soft tissue.

Whoops... George was quick on the draw.

He was probably a leftie. Not anymore.

Had a blackcat blow up in my hand when I was young. Split my thumbnail in half.

Lucky.

This kid was obviously holding larger ordnance. M80, Cherrybomb, etc.

It looks like theres a bone or bone fragment perpendicular to the fingers starting from the middle knuckle of the pinky (i hope i'm not losing you with all my technical jargon ;) ) - what is that?

looks to me like they wrapped up a severed finger in the gauze just to keep it all together till they got to the hospital.

Maybe his thumb?

Looks like part of some finger. Difficult to say which, but I'd guess not the thumb. This type of injury is beyond repair. I would venture to say that there's little tissue that's repairable in that hand, and if this victim winds up with just the pinky, he's lucky.

I was reading some medical blogs and came across this image.

http://www.gruntdoc.com/

There's a couple of other photos (of x-rays) there.

He says..

Another in a series...

Fireworks are a lot of fun to watch, and I enjoy our family fireworks displays (when it's rained enough to allow them to be fired safely). Fireworks can awe, and entertain.

They can also maim. I work in an ED, guess which I'm going to focus on.

Patient on New Year's Eve, reportedly holding an 'artillery' firework: fired from a tube there's a whoosh and a sky burst. This one fired in the hand:

Just curious, wouldn't it be a very serious violation for a doctor to post medical info of his patient on a public forum?

As long as anonymity is maintained, I believe there's no issue.

Thanks, I'd guess in this case the uniqueness and timing of the injury and the story around it would make it not anonymous.
But you've already stated it is not your patient, I'm not focusing on you.
