Kenny, you and I agree on most things. I find it interesting that you selected age 21 for drinking, and an age less than that for other things (such as voting, joining the military, etc.). I agree, though I cannot verbalize why. Can you? |

Drink: 21 I wouldn't mind an exemption for those in active duty military service though. I would have put 18, but the reality is that most 18 year olds are still in high school for a time, and that would facilitate underage drinking even more than it already exists. Smoke: 18 Drive: 16 Join the Army: 18 Have consensual sex: 16 However, I don't think it appropriate to send a 17 yr old to jail for having sex with a 15 yr old. Own a credit card: 18 Vote: 18 |

I would change one thing: I would allow 14 year olds to have a glass of wine with a meal. |

Drink: depends what you mean by 'drink'. Do you mean legally purchase and consume alcohol relying on one's self-regulation? 16, as long as tremendous effort is expended on extolling the wrongfulness of drinking and driving. Smoke: same. Drive: 16. See above. Join the Army: 16. Have Consensual Sex: 14, as long as tremendous effort is expended on extolling the responsibilities of having children. Own a credit card: Never. Vote: 16 Also, if marijuana were legalized, what should the age limit be?: 16. |

Bernard, that is interesting. Drinking and driving was the only reason I didn't put 16 as what I felt should be the drinking age. Same with marijuana. |

For those that left Marijuana off the list, do you feel it should not be decriminalized/legalized? |

OK, talking "ideal" here... Drink: 0 Smoke: 0 Drive: as long as the person can pass all the tests (throw in a psychological evaluation if you want to make "maturity" a requirement), age is irrelevant Join the Army: as long as the person can pass all the tests (psychological evaluation included to determine "maturity"), age is irrelevant. Have Consensual Sex [and anything that's predicated by "consent"]: to be determined by psychological evaluation. Own a credit card: 0, just let the card issuers worry about what kind of risk they want to take Vote: as long as one is eligible to pay tax, one should have the right to vote (I think that age is zero since the IRS can tax you pretty much as soon as you're born) Also, if marijuana were legalized, what should the age limit be?: 0 Run for public office: 0, just let the voters decide. My principles are simple: 1. The government should not regulate personal behavior when that behavior cannot adversely affect others. Drinking, smoking, marijuana use fall into this category. 2. Ability/maturity over age. Joining the armed forces and driving fall into this category. Consentsual sex and eligibility to enter oneself into any legally binding agreement (marriage included) fall into this category. 3. On voting: "No taxation without representation." If you're going to tax me, I want to have a say on how you should use my tax money, which means I get to vote. 4. Let the stake holders decide. The "credit card" and "public office" questions fall into this category. The card issuers are the "stake holder" in case of credit card issuance. The voters are the "stake holders" in case of deciding who should serve in public office. For a moment, I was tempted to make "intelligence test" a side-by-side requirement that goes along with "psychological evaluation" wherever the latter is mentioned, but then decided that "stupid people" is probably a necessary part of the system after all, and that they too have the inalienable right to enjoy sex and procreate. If the "stake holders" want to issue credit cards to morons or vote idiots into public offices, so be it. |

I don't understand why many of you are for drinking age 18 or 21. In my experience, this only increases the incentive for minors to drink - it is cool to drink because it is forbidden. Just take a look at those countries with a drinking age of 16 or 14 - they don't have a bigger youth alcohol problem. Quite to the contrary, I believe that most minors learn to deal with alcohol in a more rational way. |

Agreed. I left the age as 18, but it's really a non-issue, to me. |
