I'm not talking about the offical video, but the cell phone video that caused the big stir.

Was I the only one who, when it came out, thought: "cell phone video? do they have cell phones with video now? jeez, i've never heard of them but prison guards have them in Iraq?"
In my defense, I was left unsupervised.

jon,

Don't feel bad. North America generally lags behind other parts of the world when it comes to cell phone technology, and older people are generally more oblivious to innovations in this area.

I don't know what you mean by North America lagging behind the rest of the world in cell phone technology. Cell phones with video have been available here for quite some time. I am not surprised that a prison guard in Iraq would have one.

America does lag behind. In service plans, in international stuff, and in all around usefulness.
And how are you today?

He said cell phone technology. That is something I know a little about. The stuff you mention I can't speak to.

oh. ok.

Well, I think technology does too. The only way I can say that, though, is because everytime I go to visit my dad he has a new company phone. Then I notice that the same phone technology comes out about a year later here.
And how are you today?

heck...even *I* have cell phone video, and have had for several years. Also...I believe there were reports that a government official, not a prison guard, was arrested for making the phone vid.

I don't have video capabilities, or even a camera! Then again, my phone is 3 years old.
And how are you today?

I'm a semi-luddite. New technology often has little utility at first. My phone makes phone calls. It can text too, but I don't.

Ditto. I can't tell you how tempted I've been to pitch the damn thing out of the Jeep window, going down the highway... Hrmph...

I don't have a camerphone but Jose does.

I just found out yesterday that people use webcams to have live phone/video conversations with people.

I had no idea people did that.
How long have people been doing this?

An easy way to send a text message to someone:

Use your e-mail program and type in the message you want to send. The address of the recipient is their phone number @teleflip.com. Works like a charm, for those of us who can't text, it's a great way to send a quick message to someone.

So, the recipient would be 13125551234@teleflip.com, where the phone number is 1-312-555-1234.

I bought my first webcam in 1998 and had live video conversations with people at that time.

Its funny, I have one of the newest blackberries (the model that came out just over 1 yr ago), it has a speakerphone, but no camera.

Most of my friends have cameraphones. My wife has a Razor, with camera. Heck, it might even do video, but I just hadn't thought or heard of that until the saddam story.

In my defense, I was left unsupervised.

They can do that, but videochatting is their primary function.

that's because blackberry is a "business" phone, and camera phones are (have been) restricted or banned from offices because of security and privacy issues.

it's unfortunate, but it is getting harder and harder to get a good phone without camera, mp3 player, video, tv, games etc etc.
