I think same-sex couples should be able to have the same rights (and responsibilities) as heterosexual couples. I'm ok if they call them civil unions instead of marriage, as long as the rights are the same.

i don't have a problem with same sex marriages  being legal but i do have a problem with same sex marriages  raising kids - under no circumstances should this be allowed :puke:

Is the :puke: necessary, troll? Yeah, didn't think so....

Actually, the little emoticon was very useful in totally undermining his argument.

Just where is the downside? (This is not a rhetorical question. Any answers would be appreciated.)

Well Steve, I guess you just haven't considered all the ramifications...

By the way, Its good to see that we're going 2-1 pro gay unuions - and on a (relatively) conservative board.

I've always thought that within a generation we won't be having this discussion anymore (in the US or Europe, at least). The percentge of under-30s who have an issue with gay unions is downright miniscule.
In my defense, I was left unsupervised.

I don't see any harm in same-sex marriages. If there is no harm, I see no reason for the government to prohibit them.

In fact, I think it would help stablize same-sex headed families.

Just where is the downside? (This is not a rhetorical question. Any answers would be appreciated.)

From my own experience I'm not sure I agree with that. I think there's a lot of bigotry out there. This place is far from representative.

I agree that there IS a lot of bigotry out there. But I don't see it nearly as pervasive in those under 30.

I'm pleased with the way this thread has gone in terms of the responses being mostly civil but I'm interested in the fact that most of the people who voted no haven't posted.

I guess 89th voted no and he posted a detailed, thoughtful response. Maybe I'm being naive but I'd like to read more posts from people who voted no.

I think it's more likely that people often avoid discussions where there's a likelihood of them being accused of bigotry. I don't believe that being opposed to gay marriage or gay parenting is necessarily bigotry, but opposition is often interpreted that way.

I think we're all guilty of occasionally seizing moral highground that isn't there.

But that question can be turned on its head too. What is bigotry anyway? It sounds trite but it's an interesting question. I've never posted on a forum with anyone who was bigoted.

Let's say a hypothetical person tolerates *everything* in others except one thing, intolerance.

Is he a bigot?

Should intolerance be tolerated?

Pretend I'm not talking about me.
A hypothetical person.

If intolerance was not tolerated, everyone would have to agree, and that would be a very boring world.
And how are you today?

I agree and admit that it will eventually a non-issue and a reality. That doesn't mean I cant oppose it now, but I also know that it will either be moved to the states entirely or will be legal nationwide. The Gay Agenda(tm) has made most kids these days completely unaware that there really is a debate at all.

Intolerance toward homosexuals should be tolerated because people should be able to be intolerant if they want to?

No to marriage. It's just WRONG.

But I have no problem with civil unions. Anybody should be able to make any kind of legal contract with another person (withing reasonable limits,) that one wants.

Pretty Liberal of me, doncha think?

Not really.

I'm somewhat reminded of what the Duke of Wellington said after Waterloo, "They came at us in the same old way, and we killed them in the same old way".

After the 22nd thread on the subject, I'm quite sure you know my position as well as I know yours.
