I cannot say what happens in this thread but since I am starting it I want to say what I hope it might be like. I would like you to say whether you think that same sex marriage should be legal or not and give a brief summary of your reasoning and feelings about it. My hope is that we will not make this thread an issue of taking sides. I hope it can be a conversation and not a debate. I think that same sex marriage should be legal. I believe that civil law should provide equal protection for same-sex couples. I believe and feel strongly that religion is a matter of individual freedom. I believe that people have the right likewise to choose for themselves whether they want to live in same-sex relationships and since they do I think same-sex couples should be afforded the protection of the rights and responsibilities of the law like everyone else. ![]() |

I think same-sex couples should be able to have the same rights (and responsibilities) as heterosexual couples. I'm ok if they call them civil unions instead of marriage, as long as the rights are the same. |

I do not believe in using religion to dictate law unless a potential law will infringe on my religious rights. That is not the case here, so religion is out. I believe (and I think most people believe) that marriage should be defined at some point. Right? So this point should be defined where the individual making the decision thinks its best for society. Personally I think this point ends with one man and one woman. Not only because of tradition, but also because of the natural reproductive process and how history has shown that this union is by far most stable for a society. I believe once you start defining marriage as more than that, you open a can of worms, a slippery slope to the Nth degree. When it comes to the adoption rights for married couples, I think those rights should be extended not only to gay couples but any responsible adult(s) who honestly offer a better environment than the kid is currently getting. That is all. As far as hospital rights, taxes, insurance, I think they are based on marriage because that covers 95% of all situations and makes it alot easier for the paperwork. However, I would support programs that let anyone (straight, gay, family, friend, etc) have hospital and legal rights if the individual so chooses. I believe taxes and insurance are meant to encourage family growth, financial stability, etc...so those should still stay with the "married" requirement. |

I agree with jon-nyc (I should get a bumper sticker that says that and save myself some keystrokes). I also think that the government should get out of the "marriage" business and just register everyone who wants their relationship recognized under "civil union". If folks want to get "married" in a church as well, that's fine. |

I don't see any harm in same-sex marriages. If there is no harm, I see no reason for the government to prohibit them. In fact, I think it would help stablize same-sex headed families. Just where is the downside? (This is not a rhetorical question. Any answers would be appreciated.) |

It seems that a lot of people who object to same-sex marriage object on the grounds that marriage is sacred. Judging the sanctity of relationships belongs in church in my opinion. |

I agree with jon-nyc, but in addition to the "rights" that they should get, they should be subject to all the downside that married couples are when the relationship fails. |
