Bach - Suite for Cello No. 1 in G Major - Prelude; ...video of me playing it on the piano

Note: Read this first...

Well this piece isn't very tough at all, but very fun. This is one of my favorite pieces for the cello (and guitar, bass, etc) and I've listened to it for years, but I've never heard it on the piano. So I downloaded the sheet music a couple weeks ago (you might remember me asking about it, and thanks to PJ, I was able to print it out).

It's an interesting piece, because since it was intended for the cello, almost the whole thing is one note at a time. As you'll see in the video [sarcasm] it is really challenging for the left hand [/sarcasm]. It's also fun, because you can sort of place your hands however the hell you want in order to make it smooooth.

Anyway, one more note (no pun intended) on the production, this was the second time I played it all the way through (AKA, I just finished learning it), so you'll see a couple mess ups, but I couldn't record it again, since the battery on my camera died right after filming this....so it really was a one-time take! I also played it louder than normal so that the audio would be picked up. Yes...I need to tune the piano.

One question: Should I use the pedal next time? I only used it in the very end during the conclusion to give it a special sound, but perhaps I should use it throughout?

Ok, I'll put on my tomato shield now.... :tomato: :tomato:

Can you view it, though?

I thought I could still directly link to it.

I love that right-hand solo when you just put your left hand on your lap. That was really impressive. That bit at the end was pretty cool, too.

(by the way, I'd probably take a breath after the last note at 1:20/1:21 -- just a little pause)

I was able to fix the link. Here it is:

Funny, it doesn't sound like Bach, but love the red suit.

Thanks LW and PJ. I really dont like playing in front of others, and this was the first time I tried filming it, so there were at least 3 parts I would do differently if I could, but alas...the battery died. Once I get it down a little better, I'll try and play it faster (and maybe one octave down!).

Just kidding. Cool ending. Good memory work in a short time. I'll say again, it would work better as a lh work.

 no, i don't think you need pedal for Bach except maybe for a legato long reach!

 Wow. I am uber* impressed with your memorization skills....you only asked for the sheet music a week ago, didn't you? Something that I struggle with; good for you.
Great piece Isaac. I love Bach's cello material. Learning the cello is on my short list of things to do before I get old :hat: . That was inspiring.

 I studied German for 7 years, but I don't use that word unless I am sttempting to string together some fragmented sentence. For some reason, it bothers me when people use it (unless they are actually speaking German).

Oddly, I was thinking how you were coming along with this while driving home from work today.

I really liked it.

Thanks very much everyone. It was actually kinda neat to watch it myself, since you never get to see yourself perform outside of the first-person perspective. Maybe I'll record some other pieces and post those since my tomato-shield stayed pretty dry this round.

Sue, I think you would rather hear a baby cry during a movie than hear me as I learn a piece. I have very poor sight-reading skills, so I learn slowly and awkwardly. But the advantage of the way I learn is once it's in my brain it stays there and I can throw the sheet music away forever! :P

I liked it! Hey, there's a piano transcription of the solo violin chaconne too, you should learn that next. :)

really neato!

You have a nice soft touch and the music (not just the notes) is always in your intent, that makes you special. With my piano memory problem, your quick retention of the score amazes me completely. I sure wish I had my young brain back again.
