Heh, here we are complaining about 5,000kbs...

I'm only 22 and I remember 28k as I used it for a long time, so I am sure some of you remember when we used to use plastic cups and a string..

Curses!!! You never read techie geek threads.

Plays, make sure you don't settle for anything less than the latest Wireless-N specification router. Post us the model number and we'll make sure he's got you something decent :) :D

Phykell, it's a deal. I'll let you know.

Comcast cable here too, I got

6k
350
92 ms

on the new york server

but on the SAn Jose server I get

23k
350
23 ms

I'm not sure what the test is measuring but it's clearly not intrinsic to one's internet connection if the results vary so widely between servers.

I'm paying twelve bucks a month.

Is that some kind of introductory deal or is that your regular price?

(Gathering ammo for phone/cable/internet provider negotiations later this month).

How do you get it for $20/month?  I pay nearly double that.  Might be time for a phone call...  :sword:

Yes, make that call, both of you. I'm paying twelve bucks a month.

i pay $40 for the same speed :weeping:

I think the $12 sbc yahoo deal is introductory. Note that whatever your plan, when the year is up your billings reverts to the $40 region. You need to call and ask for a new plan - you can get the $19.99 without any hassle, just ask what plans they have.

Note to Plays - I just bought a router from Netgear - advertised as having 7 antennas (all internal). I use it with my laptop which is at the other end of the house, and it works very well, even though the laptop doesn't have a MIMO wireless card. Cost was $79 (think there are several versions of this router). As added security I enabled the MAC-ID recognition fuction - the router will only talk to radios that you have pre-entered the MAC-ID of (ie you tell it the MAC-ID of your laptop and that is the only thing it will talk to - room for as many MAC-IDs as you want to enter).

I do this too, as I like specifying what computers to allow on the network and automatically reject the rest. Also, I only allow the N traffic, rejecting all the low-life B and G traffic around us. The network card picked up 5 other wireless networks around us and I was able to connect to 2 of them.

Picked up this LinkSys router and network card last night. Plays is a happy camper, so Improv is in high cotton. Figured if we're already at 13.5 Mbits now, it's only a matter of time before we're bumped up higher and didn't want to be limited by the router capability. Verizon has already laid the fiber optic cable in the neighborhood - so it's only a matter of time for 100 Mbits.

Here's what I can't figure out. They're saying that the wireless N-Spec is faster than wired ethernet. Faster? How can this be? I always thought nothing could be faster than a wired connection. But then, I remember the days when they said the fastest possible transmission speed over a phone line was 9600 baud. (My first online expericence was at 300 baud. You could read the text as fast as it came across the line.)

I'll tell y'all. It's hard to keep up with the Joneses on this board.
Couple of years ago, Kenny is raving about his new hybrid and I just HAD to have one. Now an N-spec router. Oh, and I'm reading the roomba thread on WTF and thinkin', DAMN... I may have to get one of those.

If telemarketers ever figure out I'm a sucker for online testimonials, I'm screwed! :D

Improviso, the newest product I've been trying recently is 20 year old women! You have to try it. You simply must. It can be expensive, no refunds, but it looks great as an ornament on your arm. The higher end models sometimes even make sandwiches, but they are all glitchy. The manufacture refuses to fix them, so you have to live with it.

Steve, I keep a somewhat weather eye on what SBC/AT&T offers, then call them and whine about being one of their "preferred" customers, and that I should get whatever best rate they're offering at the time.

I went from $26 to $19 to $12.95 doing that.

(I do have my land line, cell phone service and DSL with them.)

It's a myth I tell ya......there is no Wireless N spec.  :D

 indeed.

more cabling work, but the nicest upgrade would be to run some cat6 cable and leave the wireless for the case when you really need mobility.

Some wireless is faster then some wired, but fastest wireless is far slower than fastest wired. Some raw speeds (of course, with wireless, actual speed is likely 40% of raw)

wireless:

  • 802.11b 11Mbps
  • 802.11g 54Mbps (108Mbps with "enhancements")
  • 802.11a 54Mbps
  • 802.11n over 100Mbps

wired:

  • 802.3i ethernet: 10Mbps
  • 802.3u fast ethernet: 100Mbps
  • 802.3ab gigabit ethernet: 1000Mbps
  • 802.3an 10Gigabit ethernet: 10000Mbps
