Mums-to-be in Germany are hoping to avoid giving birth before New Year's Day so they can land a financial windfall.

The German government is hoping to encourage more people to have children by offering up to 25,200 euros (£17,000) for every baby born, but the initiative does not begin until January 1.

Parents who take time off work can receive two-thirds of their salary for a maximum of 12 months up to a monthly limit of 1.800 euros.

A second parent can take up to two months off on the same terms, so a family can benefit for a total of 14 months.

Doctors and midwives have warned women not to use medical means to delay their impending births but the media have been offering tips on ways to avoid giving birth in the next few days.

Christian Albring, president of the German association of gynaecologists, revealed all of his patients are looking for ways of extending their pregnancies.

He said: "They've all asked about possibilities of delaying delivery, but none want to risk their babies' health."

The expectant mothers have been told to avoid red wine, physical activity and baked Christmas foods that contain cinammon or cloves.

Midwife Stefanie Koehn said: "Try to lie down a lot and avoid stress."
