http://www.abc.net.au/news/newsitems/200612/s1818450.htm The death toll of US soldiers in Iraq has reached 2,975, surpassing the toll from the September 11 attacks that sparked the US "war on terror". Three US soldiers have been killed around Baghdad, bringing the number of US fatalities in Iraq since the 2003 invasion to two more than the number killed in the 2001 World Trade Centre attacks. Tens of thousands of Iraqis have also perished, many in a murderous wave of sectarian violence racking their country. The milestone comes as US President George W Bush faces growing dissatisfaction over the Iraq war. A CNN poll released on December 18 found support for his handling of Iraq had plunged to 28 per cent. A record 70 per cent said they disapproved of his war management. Mr Bush is expected to unveil a new Iraq strategy with an address in the new year. The President is thought to be sizing up a plan to boost the number of troops in Iraq, currently around 129,000, by 15,000 to 30,000 for a period of less than eight months. That would include an influx of soldiers into Baghdad, despite reported opposition from military commanders. |
