HOLY CARP!!!

Okay, Okay, I know, I know, sorry - we can't say Christmas any more. ![]() How many holiday cards did you get? Pick the closest number. Did you get any e-mail ones INSTEAD of real ones? Do you think this tradition is fading? |

I think I got about 3 or 4. I don't send any out, just attach a note to any gifts I'm giving. My roommate, however, had a list of about 70 people she sent them out to, and received almost as many. I don't think this tradition is dying anytime soon! If anything, it seems to me like more people are sending out Christmas cards than before, since it's so easy now to do your own photocards. |

We dumped all ours in the mailbox yesterday.. the people behind us wondered when we were going to get done. The stacks just kept coming.. we had around 100, 110 as well. |

Tell me about it... We actually have a Christmas card issue going on right now. We got 75 photo cards made up and send regular cards to the rest. Apparently one of the "regular" recipients thought they should have received a photo card, so it sounds like they are pissed. So I guess we'll be sending 99 cards out next year. ![]() |

Not if you are self employed. It is difficult to put a price tag on goodwill. |

So you mean Christmas cards like "Happy holidays from Naylor's Hardware", instead of "Happy Holidays from the Johnsons", that kind of thing? |

Isn't that the same thing? (Not trying to be a dick or imply anything, I'm just curious. My parents are very much into sending Christmas cards but I've possibly sent out 10, ever. So for me, sending out 100 seems like a huge gesture.) |

Oh no.. less than half were business contacts. To answer your question, there is a difference between PR and relationship building. PR goes out to the public at large, not specific individuals. It is mass and rather unfocused. Relationship building is when I hand write a personal note to each person I send a card to. |

I got one that was a photo of kids, that said Happy Holidays. No where on the envelope, card, etc. did it say any name.

Hi Artoo! How's the neck? I popped my back a bit the other day moving a new safe downstairs. We got tired of paying for safe deposit boxes. Hurts, but not incapacitated. |

When deciding who to do business with I give ZERO consideration to who sent me a Birthday or Holiday card. I don't want to "build relationships" with anyone I do business with except maybe my doctor, and a card wouldn't do that anyway. In fact I think it is annoying to get a card from the first loan officer who gave me a mortgage loan (and ripped me off BTW) or from my insurance agent. Every purchase is a fresh opportunity to give a fair shake to every seller. If you want to get my repeat business give me good service, product and price. Using Christmas cards as advertising is offensive and tacky and yet another example of how Christmas today is just about money. Just one opinion. |

I just don't fit in your brain Kenny. And you're not in my business. I form relationships with customers. In my line you will see pretty much everyone again, sometime, somewhere. I can't think of anyone who regards a handwritten personal note at the holidays as tacky or annoying. |

Mik there are a range of people. That's why I love to speak up and watch your reaction to many of my thoughts. You seem to have little experience with people who think differently. People vary. It is likely the ones who are offended by your use of Christmas as an opportunity to get in some advertising, "hand-written and personal" or not, are, like me, too gracious to tell you. I don't tell my insurance agent, it's not that big of a deal really. I just think a little less of her for doing it. Next year I give my business to her or not regardless of the card thing. Advertising is advertising, people aren't stupid. |

Mine too, Kenny. Christmas is Christmas, and business is business. The Christmas cards I enjoy receiving are the ones from people I care about; good friends and family. Christmas cards as advertising is tacky; we get several from real estate agents every year, and they go straight to the recycling pile. And those agents would be at the bottom of my list if I needed to call one. |
