this is for all the suckers who believe our Governments do everything with the best interests of it's citizens in mind! our Government is in the process of selling of the country's main telco provider, Telstra, with the proceeds(approx $40 billion - a lot of money for our small country) being deposited into the Future Fund the 'Future Fund' sounds like it may be a contingency plan for the future of the country - things like our ailing hospital system or disgraceful mental health issues, our rivers which supply water over 4 States and are almost dry with Sydney expected to run out of water in a few years, the impending Climate Change issue - maybe we could fund solar energy infrastructure or development of hybrid cars... but alas, the Future Fund is to ensure public servants and politicians pensions and benefits will be met!

note in the first paragraph there is mention of "critical Government services, such as health and aged care." but the 'future fund' will not address these issues - the pollies are ensuring they will be looked after no matter what happens! http://www.futurefund.gov.au/about_the_future_fund/outline The Australian Government’s first Intergenerational Report highlighted that if Government policies are not adjusted, the current generation of taxpayers is likely to impose a higher tax burden on the next generation in order to pay for critical Government services, such as health and aged care. In addition to these pressures the Budget will be facing pressure from the Australian Government’s unfunded superannuation liability, which is currently the largest quantifiable liability on the Government’s Balance Sheet. As at 30 June 2005, this liability stood at $91 billion and it is expected to grow to over $140 billion by 2020. Currently the unfunded component of the Australian Government’s superannuation benefit payments is paid from the budget, on a pay as you go basis. The Government is currently paying out approximately $4.5 billion a year in gross superannuation benefit payments. If this were to continue it would result in a burden of around $7.5 billion a year in 2020 at a time when the Budget will already be facing pressure from an ageing population. In response to these pressures, the Australian Government announced in the 2005-06 Budget that it would create the Future Fund, with the defined purpose of accumulating sufficient financial assets to offset the Australian Government’s unfunded superannuation liability by 2020. |

I thought it was nice. His country clearly needs the tax revenues from his gainful employment. The most patriotic thing he could do is get a job and start paying taxes. |

Given that Moosetoe is an idiot anticapitalist environmentalist whacko, about the only part of his post that I believe he has right is that his government is privatizing the phone company, and he's too stupid to understand why his statement "this is for all the suckers who believe our Governments do everything with the best interests of it's citizens in mind" is at complete odds with that. He's mad because he doesn't trust his government, and he's mad because his government is getting smaller. Pathetic. |

moron, i believe in capitolism in the absence of a better system but it is not perfect by any means - just look at your own country - a thriving economy does not necessarily to a better and happier society and unfortunately our PM is following the US as for your comment on the topic of this thread - try using those little grey cells more - our Govt acknowledges funds are going to be harder to find in the future - our Govt is making contingency plans for their own pensions(by selling off the country's assets) while failing to address other issues vital the country's welfare when those funds are harder to find in the future it will not be the pollies, judges and public servants who suffer will it? |

quite a few years ago they sold 49% of Telstra and now are in the process of selling the rest apparently our broadband infrastructure is the worst in the Western world(some suburbs do not have access to basic broadband) and they recently abandoned plans to upgrade the network but as long as the pollies pensions are secure, nothing else matters it seems! |

I'm going to go outside my normal parameters and give mmmaestro a serious reply. 1. So your position is that public servants, government workers, should not have the pensions they have worked for safeguarded and provided for? Government jobs are no piece of cake. many of them are mind-numbingly boring and stifling for anyone with a shred of creativity. I seriously doubt it is different down under. Perhaps you should instead look at it as your government acting now to fulfill a sacred trust in an age when corporations are trying to get out of paying their obligations to retired workers. 2. I would venture to say your telecom infrastructure is a mess precisely because it was 3. Get a job. Your country needs you. Seriously. |

First off, you don't know sh!t about American society. Second, you've proving my point, moron. There *is* no better system than capitalism. That's why your phone system is as you put it, the worst in the Western World. It's been operated by government. Break up the monopoly, allow private enterprise to compete in a free market, and watch how quickly your phone system improves. You're about the stupidest bag of meat I've ever met. |

ah!........so there is a brain inside that melon head of yours after all  firstly, the 'old' super scheme was set up in the '60's and is a very very generous scheme - this may have been to compensate for low salaries as govt employees were poorly paid back then compared the private sector but from the '70's onwards salaries were increased and now are probably $10k pa higher than those in the private sector for ordinary workers around 1990, all new employees were employed under a new scheme (a not so generous scheme)and old employees had the option to join this or remain in the old scheme - i think the writing was on the wall then for what's happening now everybody agrees that the pension in 20 years and more will either be non-existent or will hardly be enough to buy the weekly groceries same can be said for the quality of healthcare, water supplies, roads etc. or virtually everything that Govt provide in short, everybody else is going to taking the pain except public servants surely the most equitable way would be to roll back their benefits in line with the rest of the country secondly, the telecom infrastructure needs a $4 billion upgrade which Telstra promised and then reneged thirdly, f@ck off! |

Mik, are you mmmaestro007? If so, your use of a puppet is not too creative. It has been a long time since I've been here, and now, I see, perhaps why. Whatever happened to civility? Goodness gracious! Manners, please. This is a family forum and the language is far, far from family-safe. I certainly would not want my 12 year old son looking at this. |

injun, i know that our minimum wage is $12 @ hour and everybody on minimum wage dosen't have to work 2 - 3 jobs to make ends meet, yet! i know we don't refused medical treatment if we don't have insurance, yet! i know we have 4 weeks annual holidays (which allows more quality time for those with kids) though this will now gradually be brought back to two thanks to our f@ckhead PM developing a good society is so much more about shaping lives than working and generating profits if a kid never sees his father who works 2 or 3 jobs how will the kid turn out? what strain is put on the mother and their marriage? will this lead to a broken home? does the kid then turn to drugs for solace? then to crime to pay for the drugs? but don't worry, we're right behind you! |
