WARNING: Although this isn't gross, this is very disturbing to me for some reason.

Could a scientist please tell me if this is real (they act like it is), and if so...what in the HELL just happened???

I think it is. There is also species of wasp, I believe, that lays its eggs on a particular caterpillar, and the hatched larvae slowly consume the caterpillar leaving only the part of host caterpillar's brain, corresponding neural network and organs that enables it to feed and digest food. The wasp larva quite literally conscripts the caterpillar to feed exclusively on its own behalf until it matures and eats what's left of its host!
