How high would a sum of money have to be for you; not to keep it?

If you found it lying around.

(For example, in between the seats at a movie theatre: http://z10.invisionfree.com/The_New_Coffee...showtopic=18442 )

I found a $50 bill outside the bookstore I worked at around Christmas time, and I felt bad about keeping it. But I did tell all the other managers I had picked it up, on the off chance we got a phone call (we did not). I kept it.

For me, a lot of it depends on the venue.

For example, if it was $10 in one of my classes, I'd definitely try to find the "loser." But if it was a $50 bill at a concert, well, I probably wouldn't make the efforts to find the people to contact.

Depends on where I found it. If the owner was identifiable in any reason manner, then I wouldn't keep anything. If it were in a store, I'd give the manager my phone number and tell them that I'd return it upon identification. If it were in some public space, it would have to be several hundred -- maybe a thousand -- before I got concerned enough to call the police (depending on what the local laws said).

That's an interesting question. Maybe $20. Depends on the situation though. If you find a $20 in a public park or in the middle of the street for instance, what do you do? How would you try to find the owner? But if you find it in a store or theater then it's easy to pass the buck (ha) to the owner or manager.
As a good person, I implore you to do as I, a good person, do. Be good. Do NOT be bad. If you see bad, end bad. End it in yourself, and end it in others. By any means necessary, the good must conquer the bad. Good people know this. Do you know this? Are you good?

What about 20,000 in a park?

I'd call the police over $20,000. Though part of me would think that someone stupid enough to carry $20,000 in cash through a park deserves to lose it. :P

But yeah, I'd feel guilty keeping it. But I'd hope no one called to report it missing! :P

I'd probably start to think about telling authorities once the sum got above $1,000.

Someone left their ATM card in the ATM machine and I didn't realize it. I pressed a bunch of buttons to get it to clear and it spit $80 and the ATM card out. It was the middle of the night. I couldn't go in the bank. I called the police non-emergency number and they sent someone to make a report and take the money. The operative word is take gentle reader. I found out later that he stole it. Oh, well. Better him than me.

Shouldn't the question be how low would the sum have to be for me not to keep it?

Yes, the cop put the money in his pocket, did not file an incident report, and presumably threw the ATM card in the garbage.
