I remember watching "The Wonderful World Of Disney," on Sunday nights, and I remember some archived clips of Walt hosting the show. Along with this and watching the Mickey Mouse Club, I loved all things Disney. It was magic for me as a child. As an adult, it's easy to be jaded, but then I look at the joy in my daughter's face, and I'm willing to put up with a little kitsch to see her smile like that. :)

It's only a model.

I like that genie in Aladdin, but because it's Robin Williams, not because it's Disney.

That's right. They employed 436 small but perfectly formed illegal immigrants who worked night and day to build a model fox which would look exactly like a real cartoon character.

Nowadays of course they'd probably use a model computer. I blame the government.

Disney's "Song of the South" was the first movie I ever saw in theaters.

Ah....Queen Pelicula, how you had no idea how much of an understatement it would be if you said "This is the first of many movies you will see, Isaac."

I have a poster from the original release of Bambi. My grandparents owned an antique shop for YEARS, and when it came in, she gave it to me. :)

My faves are Alice in Wonderland and Robin Hood. Though Lion King and Aladdin are both fantastic. It fell off the rails with Pocohantas (sp?), and hasn't gotten back on.

And John, you're right, the Disney Pooh is...poo.

Sorry, that wasn't very Christmasy, was it.

We're here with you John.
And I grew up with "The Magic" too.
No more.
We're no longer smiling or nostalgic.

It's an alternate type of evil IMHO.

Anyone here read: "Disney - The Mouse Betrayed" by Peter & Rochelle Schweizer? An interesting read for the curious. Biased yes, outrageous in part, ... but interesting.

We detest Disney b/c it perniciously needles in, seduces, then elbows and bullies almost anything else representing childhood joy, happiness, music, art, creativity or fantasy. They've done it for generations. We don't like this.

Needless to say, but we'll never visit Disneyland.
There aren't any goofy Disney ornaments on our Christmas tree either.

:)

I was born in Tampa and that's an hour and a half drive from Disney World. My grandparents took me to Disney World when I was growing up. I have many happy memories of it. My favorite ride was Mr. Toad's Wild Ride. There is still one in LA and it is great. I remember getting Mickey Mouse watches. This was in the 70's when winding watches were still the kind you got. Disney is part of what I miss about the Florida of my childhood.

Animation is an art form and Disney is a big part of it. My favorite animated movies are all of Disney's first movies. Many of them are great and some of the new ones are great too.

As far as Disney being some kind of divide between high culture and popular culture or a representation of all that is commercial or things like this- I do not get into it. Disney is popular culture. If I want high culture I will listen to Mozart performed on period instruments. I do not mistake the two and why does it matter. I do not intellectualize Disney one way or the other. I grew up with it. I like it. As an adult I could be cynical about large media corporations and Disney is part of one but it would be a case of throwing the baby out with the bathwater.

Daniel, who wishes he owned all of Disney's movies on DVD. :excited:

I lived on the other side of Central Fl from age 9-14. Disney World was a big deal for me too, we'd go several times a year (as Daniel can attest, there were (are?) big discounts for locals :P )

I remember Mr. Toads wild ride. I loved Space Mountain, but the lines were horrendous.

But I never liked the Disney characters, or the Disney show. Never. Not sure why.
In my defense, I was left unsupervised.
