But Aqua, you can't be your own man and be owned too. He chose to position himself as the outsider with new ideas. He then abandoned them with great enthusiasm when offered the VP spot. His race was about winning, not new ideas.

Now he wants to come back and be his own man with new ideas. Trouble is, we already know whose man he is.

A Veep is supposed to support the President. That's supposed to be a good thing. It's the Presidential candidate's job to take positions, and the Veep has to go along, like it or not.

Except, apparently, when the Veep is Dick Cheney, and then it's the other way around. :P

An astute politician who disagrees with the nominee and wants to run in the future wold be smart to decline the VP spot in my estimation.

You're either your own man or you're not. Kind of like McCain.

I thought McCain was his own man until he started kissing Falwell's shoes.

I wonder if Quirt thinks that certain sectors of the population should be excluded from the political considerations of the country, and that anyone who speaks to them must be a panderer. Of course, that seems to apply only if they are (a) religious and (b) conservative.
The dogma lives loudly within me.

He did a bit more than speak to him. He courted his support.

The day you start thinking that it's OK for Democratic candidates to grovel at the feet of Al Sharpton, that's the day that I'll think that anyone who courts Jerry Falwell isn't a panderer. Particularly when McCain has always been staunchly opposed to a lot of what Falwell stands for.

Face it, McCain is licking Falwell's boots because he doesn't want a repeat of 2000, when the religious right blew up his candidacy. I'm just as disgusted when a Democratic candidate panders to the left wing of that party.

And that's the difference between us. I'm just as disgusted when a Democrat does it, but when a Republican does it, suddenly you are the famous three monkeys ... See No Evil, Hear No Evil, Speak No Evil.

Jerry Falwell, for whatever you may think of him, is not a race hustler profiting from continuing the miseries and victim mentality of his so called constituency.

No. He's far worse than that.

Well, let's see.

He's a misogynist, and he's abusively hateful toward homosexuals. He basically believes that white men should be running the country, and everyone else should be subservient.

That, to me, is enough to make him persona non grata.

Jerry Falwell is a knobhead. In fact, he's the knob-head's knobhead. The big cheese amongst knobheads. The primary peeny. King Dick. They should tow him out and sink him, after first dressing him in the alternative-lifestyle Teletubbie costume he so admires.

Well, that's how I see every presidential election. I have not been impressed by a single presidential candidate since I can remember. Edwards is trying to play the game and get elected, just like everyone else. I at least appreciate his openness this time 'round, so anything he said or did with Kerry I won't hold against him. It was a different race, he was running for a different position, and if he was playing a different tune, well, that's how the game is always played; it wouldn't surprise me.

I'm also not going to be voting for the guy, but for other reasons.
I cite irreconcilable differences.

HEAR HEAR!! :yelling:

Then we can start in on those hateful people who show up at soldiers' funerals yelling out crap like "God hates faggots," and "9/11 is God's punishment on the United States," and other vile sh!t.

Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson can also join that happy crowd.

The last president I can remember liking, was Ronald Reagan.

Amen to that.

I listened to a retired colonel say last week that, since Vietnam, the country understands how to oppose the war but respect the warrior, and that he firmly believes that it's possible to be against the war but to be in support of the troops.

Too bad that some here (not you, necessarily, Frank) don't get that. And too bad that some idiots protesting at funerals don't get that, either.

I try not to vilify people for their political views. It's like arguing religion, and it doesn't accomplish very much, in the end.

I know it's possible to oppose the war, yet support the troops. No one abhores war more than soldiers.
