HOLY CARP!!!
I'm looking for a decent bottle of red wine. Preferably a Shiraz. Priced from £10-£20 (about $30 ish).

Anyone know any good labels?

I am so adjective that I verb nouns!
You get more Euro wines probably than we do, $30 a bottle is more than I usually spend unless it is something like a Chateauneuf de Pape. For a fun red, the Beaujolais Nouveau are just out -- about $10 here -- and very drinkable.

John Clancy 2004 Plexus. Have had the 2003 last year, and the 2004 just this week. It is a blend of Shiraz, Grenache and Mourvedre, it is deep brooding and wonderful, but drinkable now. He was winemaker for Penfolds for several years and was responsible for making their classic Grange Hermitage. The Plexus was about $30 US.

If you want to go less expensive, Yalumba's 2004 Shiraz-Viognier blend is a wonderful wine, $10 US.

OR.. you could go across the channel and with a 2004(?) St. Cosme Les Duex Des Albion (make sure tio get that bottling.. although all teh St. Cosme are pretty good)Cotes Du Rhone... just lovely and maybe $15 US.

OR from Italy, 200? La Spinetta Ca' de Pian Barbera di' Asti. $22 US and awfully big and refined for a Barbera. Great stuff.

What will you be serving with it?

Well, i went shopping today. I was so upset. I went to the til point and was really expecting her to ask me for some ID and was all ready to show her my driving licence (i got so excited, it's the first bottle of wine i have ever bought!) and then she didn't even ASK me for any ID!! :veryangry: Sheesh! You know, a couple of months ago, any teenager would be over the moon to be served alcohol and not get questioned about there age but damn it, i wanted to show her my ID!! :veryangry: :P

Anyhow, i ended up getting a very nice 2004, Chateauneuf de Pape (not a bad way to start, considering it's my first ever bottle i've bought  ).

It is described as...

Quote:

Ripe-fruited, fragrant red wine from the Southern Rhone. The fruit flavours are of strawberry and cherry with a hint of raisin. This is a smooth, modern style of Chateauneuf du Pape.

What was the producer, MP? I love CDps, but they are getting quite pricey here.

One very good thing to do its to look for Cotes Du Rhones from famous Chateauneuf producers.. Domaine De La Janesse, Dom. De La Solitude, Beaucastel, Charvin.. they are usually just declassified CDP that they did not end up using in the final blend.. the Charvin is particularly wonderful year after year. The lesser ones are about $10 US and very good buys.

Good point, Tom. There was probably a time when you would have been hung in England for having it...

I only paid £9.95 for it.

It should have been £12 but was on offer at the supermarket. :D

So yeah, it should have been about $22/23 US dollars.

Just out of curiousity, I looked up that wine on the BC Liquor Board site....I couldn't find the exact bottle, but the lowest price CDP 2004 I found was about $38. Most are quite a bit higher, in the $50-60 range.

I don't buy a lot of French wine. :P
