Last night I was sitting down minding my own business watching the historical docu-drama 'The Dirty Dozen' when during a particularly noisy explosion sequence my neighbour called round to ask me whether I'd be kind enough to reduce the volume on my television somewhat. Well, the exact words differed slightly, but you take my point. I equally politely informed him that I was conducting historical research in the period of the 1940's, and that he was attacking my civil liberties with his request. He shrieked something to the effect that no such thing as 'da doirty doz'n' ever occurred in reality, and that I resembled the nether regions of an equine animal for ever thinking such a thing was true. Is this what modern education has brought us to? A man, even one as well-educated as my neighbour, who is an Associate Sales Executive with a local automobile dealership, has begun to deny WW2 even happened. In Austria, he'd be sentenced to 5 years hard labour sharing a cell with David Irvine for his troubles, and a good thing too. Tonight, I'm going to continue my research into the occurrence of the Brooklyn accent in medieval Sherwood Forest, a topic which I'm hoping will eventually lead to my earning of a PhD from the University of Trinidad and Tobego, if I can afford the postage. |
