“Phare” Tower (Lighthouse) There are some very odd concepts being floated these days for skyscrapers, just a few years after speculation that 9/11 had essentially killed the genre. Another one is the rotating building in Dubai. Big Al |

Wow. I'm torn between thinking that is the coolest building I've ever seen, and that is the most hideous thing I've ever seen. Imagine a city with a bunch of buildings with forms like that; what an amazing change to the look of a city. Almost Dr. Seuss like.

It's exquisite! Less than even money on whether it ever gets built, however. Real Estate developers are less about art than they are about gross leaseable space, and that design is going to enclose a lot of dead air. Look for it to include some plain rectangular boxes either in the design or around it if they decide to move forward with it. |

Thom Mayne is an extremely talented architect. I don't think this design is one of his best. I suppose I could be convinced otherwise, but I'm not so sure at all the archijargon about the building relating to context and its sustainable design is anything more than cover for a building whose primary design impetus is to simply look cool and inovative. That's OK as far as it goes, but then what? I heard Mayne give a lecture several years ago. I'm not sure the man ever finished a single sentence during the entire hour. Each one would be broken down into multiple outline points, and sub-points, and sub-sub-points, to the point where getting back to the original intent of the sentence was impossible to retrieve. Mayne is also responsible for giving us the new word "dwodel," meaning a hybrid between a drawing and a model. |

One of the great beauties of Paris is that it is not characterized by overly tall buildings. I believe the limit for a long time was 4 stories. I think that is nice. |

I think it looks really ugly. Personally, I REALLY LOVE this proposed design for a tower in Chicago. I also know some people hate it. ![]()

Funny.. I was just loooking at condos for sale in Chicago near the lake and downtown.. Janet and I are seriously thinking of moving here after Lauren goes to college, or maybe graduates. It would be perfect for both of us. Downtown for both of us, a marina I can walk to for me... life without automobile. Perfect. |

I believe you're correct, Mik, although I'm uncertain about the exact limit. I do recall that the Mansard roof was conceived as a way through a loophole to squeeze in one more floor. |

I'd be glad to. But I might have to go to an upright... space will be a premium. |

Well... Oprah won't be our next door neighbor or anything. For around $200K-$300K you can get a decent 2-3 bedroom condo... nothing fancy, but still nice. But I can live in a small space no problem if I like what's around me. Plus we would not need an automobile, so there is more expense (and hassle) knocked off. Actually I won't be able to afford one because it'll cost around $400-$500 a month to keep a boat here, with slip fees, shore service, getting it in and out of the water and winter storage. Just get me a good bicycle and an L pass. |
