Watching one hurts me far more than feeling it. I never watch them. When the resident mutt was diagnosed with doggy diabetes, I never thought I'd be able to give him his insulin shots. Now it doesn't bother me a bit. I do it so quickly I never even think about it, and he rarely if ever even flinches.

Now, if I had to do it to myself...    :o

I had an aunt who was diabetic. She give herself her insulin shots in her thigh. I can't imagine giving myself an injection. I have two friends with MS and both get weekly injections. One gives herself hers and the other has her husband do it.

You get used to it.

I can give myself a shot, or draw blood.

No biggie...

little prick

Sam,

Real men NEVER EVER use these two words in the same sentence. It's just not right. :D

I gave Sam the benefit of the doubt and assumed he was referring to the attending phyiscian. Next time he should ask for the buxom nurse to attend to his "prick".

And hope that he doesn't have a female doc and a male nurse that looks like Igor.

Injections or IVs are a cakewalk next to having blood gases drawn. They go into an artery for that and it really hurts.

Next time, tell 'em to do an EMLA on the site.

You may, or may not get it - at some places they'll look at you like you just grew another head, but a little topical numbing makes a big difference.

HOLY CARP!!!
I gave myself allergy shots for years. If an injection hurts, it's not the needle that is the big deal, it's the stuff in it. I had to have an MMR a few years ago and it was just awful. I have a very high threshold for stuff like that, but when the nurse pushed in the medicine, I nearly passed out. It stung and made me shivery all at once and afterward, I felt like I had been kicked in the arm by a horse.

When I used to teach, I'd occasionally let a resident (if I like him) stick me for an arterial blood gas. With local anesthesia in the skin, it really wasn't all that bad.

When I'm having a cluster headache, I have injectable Imitrex. (Imigran, to the Brits) I basically jam the auto-injector against my leg or arm and it triggers the needle, shooting 6mg of that horrid sh!t into my muscle. After that, every drop of blood in my body feels like it's racing for my head. It's awful...

I'm with Deb, I get allergy shots frequently. Relax the muscle that's getting the needle, that helps. A firm muscle offers more resistance to the needle. This works, but is harder than it sounds. Breathe deeply.

I once spent two weeks in the hospital getting these twice a day and there never was even a mention of local anesthetic. They even seemed to enjoy it a little.

Most of the time, they won't take the time.

Usually in too much of a hurry...bet they didn't do an Allen test on you for collateral circulation, even though that is SOP for the procedure.

In the hospital, as in other things, expediancy is sometimes paramount.

I put local anesthetic in everyone that I stick a needle into. It takes 15 seconds, burns a bit when it goes in, but goes a long, long way toward establishing trust, and most importantly making the patient comfortable. There's the added advantage of, if you miss the vein/artery, you can look around for it and not hurt the patient.

Yeah, I recall they did a lot of "looking around" as well. that was probably the fun part for them.
