Do you think shots hurt?; ...at the doctors

I haven't really had a shot or blood drawn for quite a few years now, and oddly enough in the last two weeks I've had two needles stuck in me.

I've never really been scared of them but since I hadn't had one in a while, I think I built up how much they hurt...they really dont! Like honestly, I have worse pain on many day-to-day things. A shot is a quick jiffy of pain and then it's over...not bad in the least bit.

Anyone agree?

If you dont know what I'm talking about...I say you give it a shot. :rimshot:

Most of the pain I suffer in the doctors is of the psychological variety.

I had both tetanus and flu shots yesterday and bloodwork. My arms hurt afterwards. :(

Taking the kids to get shots hurts my ears.

A lot.

So... Is the penicillin working? :lol2:

Seriously: Shots don't hurt. IV's hurt far worse.

Tetanus boosters can hurt for a few days. I had one once and I couldn't lift my arm high enough to switch from one bar to the other on a foosball table.
So live your life and live it well.

I just said I haven't had a shot in years, and now that I just had one...it didn't really hurt at all.

I don't find injections painfull. Like you say, i endure far worse in day to day life. Infact, i would rather have a thousand injections at once than the horrific cramp i am having right now (tmi perhaps :leaving: :P ).

I find it helps if you don't look at the needle as they give you the shot. The same goes for getting an IV put in. An IV put in correctly doesn't hurt very much, only the pinch when the needle first goes in. Don't move your arm if you have an IV in or you end up with a bruise.

The only shot that hurts is when the dentist injects Novacaine. :hide:

Watching one hurts me far more than feeling it. I never watch them. When the resident mutt was diagnosed with doggy diabetes, I never thought I'd be able to give him his insulin shots. Now it doesn't bother me a bit. I do it so quickly I never even think about it, and he rarely if ever even flinches.

Now, if I had to do it to myself... :o

I had an aunt who was diabetic. She give herself her insulin shots in her thigh. I can't imagine giving myself an injection. I have two friends with MS and both get weekly injections. One gives herself hers and the other has her husband do it.

I got Hepatitis A shots earlier this year, and the injection itself didn't hurt, but the spot was sore for a few days afterwards.

I also got a TB shot over 6 months ago, and the site still hasn't completely healed.

This morning I had some brief work done around my eye. He literally gave me a shot in my lower eyelid to numb the area. I was worried I would flinch when he stuck the needle in...only a couple centimeters from my eyeball!

I don't mind needles at all, but I don't watch them put them in. When I go to give blood (which I haven't been able to do in over a year because my iron dropped to dangerously low levels and never bounced back) I find the finger-prick test for the iron far worse than the needle for the donation.

The only shots that I really dread are the ones administered by the dentist. The mouth is just such a sensitive area.

Though I have to say, a shot to the eyelid sounds terrifying :hair:

Last weekend, I managed to impale myself with the front hook from one of these while dehooking a 26 inch fish. The rear hook was still in the fish.

Posted Image

The hook went in my left index finger at the second knuckle and the point came out about an inch away from the entry. Needless to say, the barb was imbedded and required a trip to the hospital to remove.

The ER doctor shot in some lidocaine to numb the site. This was the worst part of the ordeal and I could not watch as she did this. After a minute or so, she wiggled the hook and asked if I felt that. Nope! Cool! I could then watch as she made a small incision where the hook point exited my finger. No pain. Then she used a pair of needle-nosed pliers to pull the hook thru.

The insurance company will probably get a bill for $800. That's what it cost the last time this happened to me several years ago.

I need a safer hobby. :D

I had a tetanus shot this summer. My arm wasn't very sore at all.

Of course it hurts a little -- after all, the doctor is sticking a needle through your skin/tissue. I was very squirmish about such things as a kid, and I remember the doctor having a rough time with me sometimes when I went for a shot. Now, it's no big deal. It's a little prick, and then it doesn't hurt anymore at all. Better that then to have some disease.

Sam,

Oh, I was wrong. I thought Larry'd be the first to comment.

(Original sentence was "having a little prick is better than something like lockjaw", but then I thought about it, and revised before posting. )

I gave Sam the benefit of the doubt and assumed he was referring to the attending phyiscian. Next time he should ask for the buxom nurse to attend to his "prick".
