I think I'm going to get a real iPod; What do you think?

I've been into this idea of having a flash MP3 player. I like the idea of having no moving parts and a long battery life but I've been thinking about it:

iPod nano 8 GB $249 24 hour battery
iPod 30 GB $249 14 hour

I don't have a large CD collection and I do want to be able to use different formats- large files for some of my classical music- smaller files for others.

Battery life is something of an issue because there is a limited number of times the battery can be charged from what I understand.

There seems to be some compromise any direction you turn anyway. I think I'm going to get a real iPod.

What do you think?

That was my choice, and I have never regretted it.

I went for stogage space and got the 60G version. Between my wife and I, its our 4th iPod (we were early adopters in 2001 when they came out). I like them.

I recently got the Bose docking station. My iPod has all of my music on it, so its really easy for me to pick something out and play it at home.
In my defense, I was left unsupervised.

I have the Bose SoundDock too, and I love it. Nice sound, very convenient.

HOLY CARP!!!
iPod is the way to go.

We got the JBL dock with speakers. It's very small so it does not produce the bass that the Bose produces but it is very convenient as it is battery operated.

I don't think you can really go wrong with an iPod. I'm very happy with my iRiver 40Gig, but next time I'll probably get an iPod just because all the add-ons such as the Bose docking station tend to be made for them.
What do you mean "we", have you got a mouse in your pocket?

Unless you plan to use the thing for something like running, I would go with a disk drive based unit. I find it better to load everything on it, and select what I want to listen to on the fly, rather than preload what I think I want to listen to at a later time (for the smaller flash based units). I also get tired of loading new stuff - tend to save it up and only load stuff every couple of months.

As for manufacturer, it's personal choice. It's very easy to plug an mp3 player into any hi fi system using either the line out, or headphone socket. Not sure why everyone seems to think you need to pay extra for a special docking adapter? Also have found Bose to be good quality, but over priced. I have a 20 year old tuner amp with a set of 30 year old Celestion speakers, that make my iRiver sound fine - and I can crank Lynyrd Skynyrd to concert hall volume (wonder if ther is a point where vibration affects the disk drive?).

Large cd collections are disappearing. Remember all those albums that had maybe 2 good tracks on them, so you never bothered buying them. You can donwload the 2 tracks for less than $2 from places like itunes.

Frankly, if you are not real computer literate you should probably go with an ipod, and sign up with itunes - is probably the least amount of effort involved.

flash players are best for people that use the player during activities that might cause skipping or where weight is a concern...running, biking, etc. If you're just looking to create a portable repository of your collection, go for the HD version.

So live your life and live it well.

I have an mp3 player for when I run...I also have one in my car built in, which is REALLY nice to have (130+ songs on one disc is glorious!). Never really thought about getting an iPod, especially since I dont use iTunes most of the time. I would probably just get another flash based mp3 player.

89th - I use itunes software to rip CD's, but use a sandisk player.

CT - Creative has made some pretty popular devices in the past (Muvo?). Creative, Iriver Sandisk and Apple are the ones I see the most.

Crash - I've heard the Zen is great, and I think it actually outranked the iPod recently...probably from a George-posted article.

NY - I use WMP to rip CDs, but that's just out of habit and it works fine. Never tried iTunes, but I basically dont touch that program anymore since I stick with good 'ole Winamp which I find loads faster.
