HOLY CARP!!!
Back in October I began working on a Haydn Sonata with my teacher. Here is the series of events:

1. October 31, I ordered the book online from an amazon.com seller. The book was advertised as brand new and was a few dollars cheaper than the amazon price. I paid online, and the book was to be shipped by 1-week shipping November 2; to be safe, they set the very latest arrival date as November 22, although that was simply to allow a safe window.

2. In the meantime, I borrowed a copy of the book from the library. My teacher wouldn't let me write in it because it was a library copy, and I figured it was too much to copy the entire sonata if I had ordered the book already.

3. November 22, the book had not yet arrived. By this time, I had just about finished working on this sonata with my teacher. We had not written very much at all vis-a-vis fingerings, markings, alternate phrasing, etc in the library book, which would have been very useful. Amazon.com contacted me asking for a seller rating. I held off on that rating and instead contacted the seller.

4. The seller did not reply, and the book did not arrive, so a week later I sent out another e-mail to the seller. The seller did not reply.

5. December 5, today, the book arrived. The cover is worn, and there are a couple of tears in the binding. (Remember, the book was advertised as "brand new.")

I did not e-mail the seller again, but instead left feedback at amazon.com.

2/5 stars -- Item arrived 2 weeks after the end of shipping window (over a month after the item was ordered). Seller did not reply to two e-mails. Book advertised as brand new, but arrived in worn condition. 2 stars because the book did arrive.

What would you have done? 1 star? No feedback? Sent the book back and demanded refund?

I'm still wondering if I should send the book back, ask (again) for a refund, and just buy a (not worn) copy at the store next time I'm visiting my parents (and have use of their car). On the other hand, is it worth it?

Such is the risk of online transactions.

I wouldn't depend on mail order when there is a deadline.
I'd go to a music store.

I would have gone on a killing spree and then hunted that seller down and ripped their still-beating heart out of their chest so they could see just how BLACK it was!!!!!

Um.... Or else I might just leave them a sternly worded review on Amazon...

Unless you paid a great deal for it, it's not worth worrying over if the seller won't communicate. I've bought brand new scores that have fallen to pieces in a few months. Such is life.

Your mistake was in trying to cheap out on the book, which led you to an individual seller. Stick with Amazon. There you have some recourse.

Of course, you could always file a dispute with your credit card company, but I think in this case you would lose, and you would also lose valuable hours tilting at this particular windmill.

All in all, you have the book, and you have what amounts to a pretty cheap life lesson. Know with whom you deal.

I probably would have ordered a new copy from Hutchins & Rea at the beginning.
The best edition of Haydn - imo - is the Landon edition published by Wiener Urtext. They run about $25-$30 per volume.

Much less hassle than deadling with flaky sellers.

Give that copy to the library. Keep theirs.

I think you should try to get a refund. You can complain to Amazon can't you?

Aha! *Now* they reply. I posted the feedback just 3 hours ago, and now I have an e-mail from them (with a time-stamp from 2 hours ago) requesting that I modify the feedback.

Quote:

In regards to the feedback left on the account for your purchase, I am requesting that you modify it due to the following reason.

The shipment you received was a REPLACEMENT shipment sent out to you at our cost, when the original copy did not arrive.

Below is Amazon.com's instructions on correcting the feedback.

Amazon.com doesn't allow modification of feedback. The instructions the seller provided are for *deleting* the feedback, but I can't send in new feedback after I've already sent one in.

So, why should I delete my feedback? The book was quite late, even if they sent me a replacement -- and why was the replacement in such worn condition? (several tears in the binding, for example) I would have appreciated a message when the replacement was sent out, and replies to both of my e-mails sent out over the past several weeks (both of which did not receive replies).

It's not worth a battle for $20. But I don't think I am going to delete the feedback.

I sort of had to order the book online in the first place, because I don't have a car to drive to a music store to buy the book.

I like the way they've put "replacement" in caps, as if that somehow justifies the fact that it was tatty.

Hell no, Sam, don't delete it!

If they had issues like they are claiming, the least they could have done was respond to your inquiries. Though really, THEY should have sent out the first email to you explaining what's up.

They should be happy you gave them the generous 2-star rating.

Next time go to Hutchins and Rea.

THey have a huge inventory, tell you when you're ordering whether or not its in stock, and ship the same or next day. Also, Elena says they've found all sorts of hard-to-locate pieces for her.

Re your question..

I might have done 1 star, and if I got that email there'd be a little nagging part of me that would think "what if they're telling the truth?"

Although they probably aren't. And if they had sent a replacement you'd thing they would answer your mails and tell you that.

In my defense, I was left unsupervised.

You have no proof that they ever sent out a brand new one. They never notified you of any previous shipment being supposedly lost in the mail. The replacement that they sent was not what you ordered.

I think they should shut up and be happy you were as generous in your feedback as you were. Let it stand.

Under my feedback at the seller profile, there is now a seller response:

"Book arrived 2 days after shipping window, when customer emailed stating the original copy did not arrive, we shipped out a replacement copy at our expense."

[1] The book did not arrive 2 days after shipping window
[2] I emailed stating the original copy did not arrive, because it did not arrive
[3] The replacement copy arrived 2 weeks later with several tears/creases in the binding and covers

It's not worth a battle. They've got tons of 5-star ratings, so good for them. They also have lots of 1- and 2- star ratings with the same complaints that I had.

So it goes.

Does it allow you to rate them again? Give them a NEGATIVE rating!

OT: if I'm not mistaken you can buy CDs though individual sellers on Amazon and sometimes CDs from Amazon if they have them (correct me if I'm wrong, please). I'm wondering where these individual sellers get new CDs (how strange) and what recourse (if any) I would have when buying CDs from individual sellers.

This is messed up- you should be able to go to CDNOW (Amazon bought it) and just buy them new from a store.

Sam, your feedback was perfect.
