Interesting headlines on the same story: The New York Times 15 Brigades Would Gradually Stand Down Under Plan WASHINGTON, Nov. 29 — The bipartisan Iraq Study Group reached a consensus on Wednesday on a final report that will call for a gradual pullback of the 15 American combat brigades now in Iraq but stop short of setting a firm timetable for their withdrawal, according to people familiar with the panel’s deliberations. and in a related story by the Times, the President says "fuggedaboutit!" Bush Dismisses Iraq Panel’s Pullback Plan Mr. Bush dismissed a reported decision by an independent bipartisan panel to call for a gradual withdrawal of troops. "I know there's a lot of speculation that these reports in Washington mean there's going to be some kind of graceful exit out of Iraq," the president said during a joint news conference with Mr. Maliki, referring to the panel's reports that are expected next week. "We're going to stay in Iraq to get the job done so long as the government wants us there." But the Associated Press says Something Else. Bush agrees to speedy turnover in Iraq President Bush said Thursday the United States will speed a turnover of security responsibility to Iraqi forces but assured Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki that Washington is not looking for a "graceful exit" from a war well into its fourth violent year. |
