Piano Talk--JBryan; Discuss your piano playing

JB, how long ago were those videos taken?

The reason I ask is this:
(disclaimer: no two people are the same)

I am about halfway done with Maple Leaf rag (that trio is a bitch!), and I could probably hack through the prelude that you played, and get it comfortable in about 2 months or so.

Now, you mention that you've got a good portion of the WTC under your fingers.

The point I'm trying to make is, well, maybe there's hope for me after all.

I'd rather listen to an hour of Abba than an hour of The Beatles.

About a year and a half ago.

Sure there is. All it takes is lots of work.

Man, I would LOVE to play Joplin. I started to learn and everything, but it's so completely different from the normal Beethoven or Chopin I enjoy, that I couldn't get into it...yet. The second half of that Joplin video is just amazing. So fun to listen to, definitely fun to play, but probably a bitch to learn. So cool!!!

JB...often I'll find myself watching one hand more than the other while playing. For example, Chopin is a clear example of how you need to keep your eye on your left hand almost the whole time. Do you find the same to be true with Joplin? Or is it more 50/50.

Joplin is damn hard. The left hand jumps require you to memorize the chord structure, especially something like Maple Leaf. I, for one, can't do it without watching my left hand. The first two sections (in the video) are hard enough, but the trio... :veryangry:

I had to listen to some of these clips before they got buried in the stacks.

JBryan plays Bach WTC I prelude III: very nice tempo, nice tone too, keep from going faster near the end, make it sound easy too. Very nice, can’t wait to get home and play it as loud as I want.

JBryan plays Joplin Maple Leaf Rag: likewise very nice, my piano tuner plays this one too – after he tunes my poor wreck of a piano – this version sounds closer to Aldo Ciccolini’s than my piano tuner’s; you’re making it sound like it could really be danced and sung, as it should be. If you don’t know who Ciccolini is, well he recorded Joplin some time ago and added greatly to his fame as a composer and pianist.

I look forward to hearing more of you play. I look forward to being able to play more myself and post something. It will be a while though. I have serious competition for my time lately.

JBryan, you got a lot of nice compliments from folks here, you have mine too. I’m impressed with how musical everything sounded. That’s really it you know; make it sound better than just a lot of notes.

It's funny, but expression is the easy part for me.. getting the tempo right is the hard part. I'm just too damn old and slow.
