24 Hours...; Diary Of A Recovering Drug Addict

24 hours ago, I extinguished my last cigarette.
24 hours ago, I was a hopeless drug addict.
24 hours ago, I would feel irritated and increasingly tense if I couldn't have my little fix.
24 hours ago, my breath, hair, skin, and clothing smelled like an ashtray.

24 hours later, I'm still alive. Quitting hasn't been the horrible ordeal that I imagined it being.
24 hours later, I know I'm still weak and the craves are hitting me, but I know that the craves are caused by smoking, not by quitting! I am choosing to accept the craves as signs of the healing process.
24 hours later, I have the tiniest flicker of a flame of a sense of accomplishment. It's a little secret that I am keeping to myself, for the most part. (Well, except for sharing it here...)
24 hours later, I feel like I am in control.
24 hours later, I am a little lightheaded, and my hands and feet are tingling a little, as the capillaries heal themselves and my blood takes on a higher level of oxygen and my tissues take on more oxygen.
24 hours later, I feel like I have taken the first steps towards setting myself free.
24 hours later, I still smell nice from my shower, this morning.
24 hours later, my taste buds and sense of smell are coming back.

One day at a time, and I am forever one puff away from being a full-on pack-a-day smoker, but as of right now, at this moment, I am a non-smoker. I claim it, own it, and I am BEING IT.

Go, me!!!

As a reformed whore smoker, you have my sympathies and encouragement. Mrs. George and I quit cold turkey (you picked a good weekend, Frank) 21 years ago last May. The cravings last another 3-4 days, the urge another month. The desire to take a drag and fill your lungs with that great smoke still gets me every now and then. However, it was the right thing to do, and look at all the money I save! Daughter #1 quit last summer, and she's amazed at how much cash she has at the end of the month.

Keep it up buddy. We're here for you.

Also, think of how much better you'll be able to dive!

Thanks, George! I'm the only one in my house that smoked. I never smoked indoors, but just the same, my wife and daughter hated it. Being a smoker means always having to apologize...

Congrats to you and the Missus!! :) :thumb:

This quit is just cold turkey. No patches, no gums, no pills. So far, so good... :)

Awesome, Frank!

Making this change for your family is really great, and I'm sure they appreciate it.

Thanks, Dewey & 89th. If I can make it through the next month or so, I've got it licked. The hardest thing to come by is patience.... :) Thanks again.

Excellent, Frank. It will be not too long before the spousal unit snuggles up and says, "Gee, Frank, you don't smell like cigarettes. I like that...a lot."

(heh)

In another 2 months or so, you'll start smelling it on other people and you'll be shocked to admit that you used to smell that way.

Keep it up. As I said, we're here for you.

Patches, gum? Bah. All they do is continue the addiction. The addiction passes in a few days. The hard part is the habit of having a smoke when you have a drink, get up, have a cup of coffee, after dinner, in a bar....

Be strong.

Thanks!! You're exactly right, George: The physical addiction is so slight as to be unnoticeable. The psychological addiction/habit is where the real battle is being fought. If I get through the next month or so, I think I'll be okay.

Great news, Frank.. as one who quit over 30 years ago now, I can tell you that you are not 'forever one puff away'.. you will quickly get to the point where cigarettes taste JUST LIKE they did when you took your first draw.. remember how YUMMY that was (ick, gag, cough...)? They'll be just like that and you will not be able to FORCE yourself to smoke one.. I know.. I've tried.

Daniel.. rooting for you too.

Hey Frank, good for you!

I quit in 1999. I had a great online support system here: Quit Net and I think that was the reason I was successful.

Also, a good motivational tool is the "quit meter" which you can run in your toolbar. You enter data into it about how many cigs you smoked a day and how much a pack costs, and it counts up every minute how many you haven't smoked, how much money you'ved saved and how much of your life you didn't cut off. You can get it here: Quit Meter

congratulations to you on your wise decision. :thumb:

Thank you! Thank you! I used the Quit Meter before, but I don't know that I really want to keep track of each minute. As a pack-a-day smoker for years, I've begun dropping three dollars each day, into a jar. It'll be nice to take all of that money and use it for dive gear. LOL

Three bucks a day? Be glad you don't live in Chicago. Up here it's about $6.50 and up.
