Germany was chosen for the court filing because German law provides "universal jurisdiction" allowing for the prosecution of war crimes and related offenses that take place anywhere in the world.

Apparently they don't understand the concept of "sovereign nation".

Not the first time Germany has had a bit of a problem with that concept. :leaving:

And that's probably what they think about us.

Why?

Have we meddled in the inner workings of the German government? Other than to shoulder the lion's share of protecting the Fulda Gap?

I Owe It All To John D'Oh
Some people seem to have the ridiculous notion that kidnapping someone on foreign soil interferes with their right to sovereign government.

And they have the even more ridiculous notion that they have the right to protect their own citizens from abuse at the hands of a foreign government.

Silly foreigners.

After all, we'd be just fine about it if the Italian or German Secret Service kidnapped someone on U.S. soil, rather than going through the appropriate legal process.

And we never, ever go to bat for a U.S. citizen charged with a crime in a foreign country.

Some people lack ... perspective. Their position shifts dramatically depending on whether it's their ox that's being gored.
It would be unwise to underestimate what large groups of ill-informed people acting together can achieve. -- John D'Oh, January 14, 2010.

No wait a moment, the German gov't is not a Plaintiff in the case. The Plaintiffs are a bunch of allegedly abused Iraqis and a Saudi who have "the support of Michael Ratner, president of the Center for Constitutional Rights, a U.S.-based non-profit helping to bring the legal action in Germany". They had to shop around for a jurisdiction that had a law on the books that would theoretically enable them to file a criminal claim. If the German Prosecutor chooses not to accept the claim it's a non starter.

The problem is not with Germany or even the Plaintiffs, but rather with the treasonous actions of the US based NGO, The Center for Constitutional Rights, its President Michael Ratner and Brig. Gen. (Ret.) Janis Karpinski who presumably has an axe to grind with the Pentagon and Rumsfeld.
