I liked Romney a lot when he was a moderate Republican. It's interesting to note in connection with that article that the Democrats have controlled the state legislature in Massachusetts with a huge majority forever, but more often than not during my lifetime, there has been a Republican Governor. I think that Romney is making a mistake, as he and McCain trip over each other to court the uber conservatives and evangelicals. jf |

Got to remember that you have to run the primary gauntlet just as in the Democrat Party. Either Mitt courts the social conservative vote, or he gets killed in the South. |

That's the problem with our two party system presently. We just had the same problem in Maine, with an incumbent liberal ineffective D governor who just beat an uber right Republican challenger. There was a moderate (fiscally conservative) very smart guy running for the Republican nomination but he didn't get it. He very clearly would have won the general election had he been nominated. jf |

Which is why I think the independent movement will eventually fall under its own weight. Either they get enough momentum to actually field candidates for the general, or the independents eventually throw up their hands as they continually have to hold their collective nose to vote. And I don't think they can successfully field candidates for the general... |

There are lots of moderates in both parties who could win a general election, but can't make it onto the ballot because the primaries slant to the radical extremes. And, if they aren't the party candidate, they can't fund a run in the general election. Lieberman is the exception that proves the rule. |
