That seems harsh on Bono. He seeks tax relief, as does every other rich person and company on the planet, and he gets slammed for using his celebrity to focus people's attention on Africa. He spends his time and I'll bet he spends a lot of money on his interests. Yes, he's a scold. Do we prefer utter silence from our artists? Should they do nothing but entertain us? Can anyone name something better he can do with his time? I'm glad when these folks have a social conscience. It doesn't mean I have to agree with them, but due in no small part to Bono, Africa is on the map, so to speak. On the other hand, Barbra Streisand can shut up.

I vote for just entertain us. Anything else is self appointed and gratuitous not to mention cloying. There's a difference between being a true leader from whatever background and being an artist with a cause.

In which case, we should also not complain about the celebrities' life style choices corrupting our youth.

We want a basketball or bassball or football star to just play ball, not to expound on his politics or life philosophy or, *gasp*, serve as a role model. Just play ball, and we don't want to care what else you do.

A lot of where that's coming from is that athletes are expected to be role models for their communities often minority communities. This makes me think of Michelle Wie getting 50,000,000 in endorsements at 16 without winning once. I'm kind of past caring about role models.

Well I happen to care if athletes use performance enhancing drugs. It sends a clear message to youth that its okay to cheat.

What's bassball? Itsounds like fun!

I have nothing against them, and I used to be able to enjoy their music. As a matter of fact, I took Janet to see them AFTER Maines' statement on Bush.  I agree everyone has the right to speak their mind.

But this continuing to harp on it and play the victim is tiresome and  appears to be self-absorbed.  They certainly have the right to do so, and if that is what they think is right, well, have at it.  But I won't be listening.  And I seriously doubt they are bigger than ever.

I find it difficult to name an artist who isn't self-absorbed. It's their job to be that way. I'm sure it wasn't easy watching their fans disappear after what's-her-name spoke her mind. But it seems to have led to some pretty good art.

I never listened to them, so they haven't lost me. But if I did listen, I wouldn't care about their politics. It's not as though I turn off Devil Went Down to Georgia when it comes on the radio just because Charlie Daniels is to the right of Larry.

Something tells me that "The Devil Went Down to Georgia" doesn't come on your radio stations very much, Dave.

Not since CBS-FM went off the air, but I used to hear it all the time on the oldies station. I always thought the demonic fiddling wasn't as demonic as it should have been. You know what I listen to? Oh right. I'm way too sophisticated to listen to this. For me, Mozart or nothing.

Turning off the snark, I'm not especially a Charlie Daniels fan, but I consider Johnny Cash, Patsy Cline and George Jones to be among America's greatest artists. I think you'd have to be deaf not to hear what's coming through them. Cash particularly impressed me with his later work. The man's depth was bottomless.

Funny you should mention The Man In Black.. I was just listening to a compilation of his work on the way home from Chicago today. Wonderful. I've always wanted to arrange a harder-rock version of Ring of Fire.

You know Mik, I seem to recall the Eric Bourdon Band did a hard rock cover of Ring of Fire back in '74 or 75. It was a short lived quartet (definitely one album because I had a copy) featuring Eric, a real hot guitarist, an excellent black drummer who was built like Sugar Ray Leonard and bass player. I saw them once on Don Kushner's Rock Concert show along with the Allman Brothers Band (circa "Brothers and Sisters" album) , Van Morrison and Foghat.

They have a right to say what they want. If you don't like what they have to say, don't listen. Don't watch. Don't buy tickets to their shows.

Vote with your feet.

No one ever said that the exercising your right to free speech was free. Some people may not like what you have to say. To the extent lawful, they can avoid having anything to do with you, if that's their preference.

And if you're not willing to risk that, shut the hell up.

Quirt, why do you always go out of your way to be deliberately nasty, scathing, and mean? Seriously: Why?

I never said that they didn't have a right to air their political views, and I would be the first one to stand up and decry any sort of censorship of them for expressing their views, but if I had paid the exhorbitant fees to see Dixie Chicks or U2 in concert, and instead, midway through the concert, the music stopped so that the entertainers could go on a political rant, (whether I agreed with their politics or not), I would be pretty pissed-off about it.

I reiterate: I didn't pay my money to attend a political rally, and I resent having one shoved down my throat. The last U2 album I bought was "Achtung Baby," and the last concert of theirs that I attended was "Rattle & Hum." I've never bought a Dixie Chicks album or attended one of their concerts, so yes, as a consumer, I am voting with my feet and my wallet, and I don't particularly need a lecture from YOU on how to do that, "Dad."

:rolleyes2:

LOL... I spent six years of my life serving our Bill of Rights, Constitution, and three Commanders In Chief. I've put my money where my mouth is. Liberal, Conservative, Democrat, Republican, Libertarian, Centrist... I'm interested in all points of view, except for those that are patently extreme, but I would never sanction or approve any kind of censorship unless national security were at stake.

The political opinions of the Dixie Chicks are as important as the contents of Donald Rumsfelds iPod. At least Donny is qualified to do something else.

AC, I saw that Eric Burdon band in 73.. they were quite good. They backed up Edgar Winter's band, the one after White Trash that did Frankensteiun (I hated that band.. White Trash was great). The first time I ever heard 'Spill The Wine' was the first time I ever dropped ____. But I digress. That was in '70.

I was thinking Ring of Fire as told by the Ramones.
