After Years On the Outs, New York Comes Back In

“It’s not just committees — our influence within the House Democratic caucus will grow enormously,” Mr. Rangel said in an interview.

To that end, he sketched out an expansive federal agenda: Teaming up with Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg on gun control, passing new tax incentives for urban job programs, and redirecting federal money to New York in return for the outsize tax collections that the federal government makes here.

“Mississippi gets more than their fair share back in federal money, but who the hell wants to live in Mississippi?” Mr. Rangel said.

I seem to recall a particularly intolerant, cynical and vicious act against NYC coming from the Bush led Republican dominated government, cutting them off from anti terrorism funds because there are "no icons of national importance in NY".

I'm sure all the anti-urban culture warriors cheered this. But how incredibly cynical, vengeful and evil such a move is. Not to mention transparently aggressive. And a big wink to all the Righties, like 'See how much we can screw them around now? Ha ha!- We're in charge now!'

So what did you expect- NYC is gonna love ya now?

You are such a revisionist.

NYC still received in 2006 $124M, IIRC, the largest allocation of any area.

If you want an example of a "particularly intolerant, cynical and vicious act", I'd submit for consideration your own statament that $124M was akin to "cutting them off from anti terrorism funds".

It's so hard imagine why a gay Black person wouldn't like Mississippi.

And yes I remember a Black musician saying Bush doesn't care about Black people- because Bush was sitting on his hands while New Orleans and it's vastly Black population went under water.

Of course the Righties loved to spin that around, saying that Kanye West said Bush "hates" black people, as though to say how hateful and prejudicial those Black people are.

Kanye West perceived that Bush hates black people. That is his perception, and to him, his perception is accurate. Whether he was or not is not the point of my quoting him.

Charlie Rangel said "Who the hell wants to live in Mississippi?" That's his perception, and to him, it's as real as West's comment.

My point is this, JJJS, and I think you're a lot smarter than you let on: The next chairman of a major committee in the House of Representatives dismissed an entire STATE, wondering "who the hell would want to live there." Do you not see the irony?

Seems pretty jingoistic to me, if you catch my drift.

Rangel is up for Ways & Means if I recall correctly. That could have some impact on funds, somewhere.

Well, at least we know that Mississippi wont get any cash. No one wants to live there.

Charlie may be eating his words, very, very soon.

There is a LOT of business moving down South, and I do mean a lot. Talking to some guys at the governor's office a couple of weeks ago, they are talking about landing three major deals (and they need it, because the governor is widely perceived to have screwed the pooch during Katrina, and Jindal will rip her a new one come election time) :

1. They are currently negotiating for a Kia plant. They are also negotiating for another foreign automaker that they didn't give me a name.

2. They are in the running, along with Arkansas and Alabama, for a new German steel mill. Now, I don't know how much steel the mill will produce, but they're talking 2500 construction jobs to build the thing.

3. The BIG one....I pinged AC about the Project Kuwait refinery a few days ago. If it goes through, it will be about 30 miles west of New Orleans, and will be a $10,000,000,000 construction project.

You do know that the water didn't come from Bush, don't you? I mean.... you do know that Bush doesn't cause hurricanes?.....

And you do know that it was the black mayor on New Orleans who was sitting on his hands, don't you? Tell me you know this. Don't leave me hanging thinking you're this ignorant of reality.

Oh, I'll give an even better one....the Mayor of New Orleans has endorsed Cold Cash Jefferson in his bid for re-election...and he has made the runoff, seat to be decided in a few weeks...
