Is it an upright or grand piano? The kind of lamp I wouldn't mind getting is way out of my price range. Tiffany lamps go for over $10,000.

Get the free standing lamp with a swing arm. Don’t get a clip-on lamp because of Murphy’s Law. No matter how careful you are, soon or later it will inevitably fall on your piano and leave a dent in the wood work. |

If you want trouble, find yourself a redhead
|
George, I have looked into this extensively, and found that none of these really work very well for me. They always have the light as much in your eyes as on the sheet, or they are too bright, causing glare and eyestrain in thes 51-year-old peepers. What I have found that works quite well is a heavy-base torchiere to the side of the keyboard, where the a lot of the light reflects off the ceiling, illuminating the sheet but also giving a nice ambient light around the whole area, not just the music. |

HOLY CARP!!!

I very strongly prefer a bright light that points up to the ceiling above the keyboard. This gives a light that is even and shadowless on the keyboard and music. Playing the piano is hard for me. When I quickly glance at the keys I need a very clear image. Navigating a piano keyboard depends on seeing patterns of black and white. Any direct lighting source casts shadows between the black keys, and these shadows will be more narrow near the light source. This offers a confusing image to my crappy brain. I need to see well-defined patters of black and white that are the same width from bass to treble. (That would be only the keys with no shadows, thank you.) Sure, you can get used to anything but you are asking what we prefer and why. (edit - Mik I just saw your post - Great minds think alike. )

It may be a function of old age, but I like two lamps, one for general lighting around the keyboard area and one to directly illuminate the music. The torchiere, or (my preference) a lamp with with a glass diffuser to give some direct light as well as a significant indirect component off the ceiling can serve for the first. For the second, I found a cheap but useful desk lamp with a fairly long rigid arm and a round shade that I have sitting with its base to the right of the music stand and its shade directly above that does a good job of putting nice bright light directly on the music.
