HOLY CARP!!!
Michigan just passed Proposal 2 -- a state constitutional ammendment to ban the use of affirmative action programs in public schools (including University of Michigan).

The president of the University has now sent out 2 e-mails explaining that she is extremely dissappointed; she also gave a big speech outside the graduate library today, and sent out an e-mail with the transcript.

Personally, I think AA has done a lot of good -- we needed something big to get us out of the mess we were in before. Now, for all intents and purposes, we've improved a lot as a society... do we need such a program to ensure that minority students are not discriminated against by admissions faculty?

And it does discriminate against majority students. The idea now -- which I agree with -- is to simply ignore race altogether when considering university admission.

The president of our university is all hung up on diversity, and she fears that we will lose some of that diversity without AA. I'm a little more optimistic.

Thoughts?

AA is racism. Martin Luther King would have thrown up at the idea.

Glad to see it's starting to be overturned...

Affirmative action = racism. No rational debate possible, sorry.

Diversity was never and is not an issue, conformity is. THAT’s the message.
It is assimilation into a society that makes democracy possible, equality meaningful, etc. Diversity? Who cares? Who should care? Who should be making any excuses? Either you play the game by the same rules as everybody else or you opt out, your choice. No special favors.

I bet the courts overturn the people’s decision. Want to bet?

U-M president has already spoken with attornies about doing just that.

She says the proposal might in fact not have been legal, and she "vows" to do all that she can to continue to protect diversity.

Since when does an appointed administrator decide to go to court against the people who appointed her?

I am joined on these steps by the executive officers and deans of our university. We are united on this. You have my word as president that we will fight for what we believe in, and that is holding open the doors of this university to all people.

Today, I have directed our General Counsel to consider every legal option available to us.

In the short term, we will seek confirmation from the courts to complete this year’s admissions cycle under our current guidelines. We believe we have the right, indeed the obligation, to complete this process using our existing policies. It would be unfair and wrong for us to review students’ applications using two sets of criteria, and we will ask the courts to affirm that we may finish this process using the policies we currently have in place.

This is our first step, but only our first step.

I believe there are serious questions as to whether this initiative is lawful, particularly as it pertains to higher education. I have asked our attorneys for their full and undivided support in defending diversity at the University of Michigan. I will immediately begin exploring legal action concerning this initiative. But we will not limit our drive for diversity to the courts, because our conviction extends well beyond the legal landscape.

It is a cause that will take our full focus and energy as an institution, and I am ready to begin that work right now. We will find ways to overcome the handcuffs that Proposal 2 attempts to place on our reach for greater diversity.

As Susan B. Anthony said in her crusade for equal rights, “Failure is impossible.”

So it's not just her.

See, I told you so – deliberately thwarting the will of the people. And Libs call it Democrat-cy.
