He said all along he'd caucus with the Dems.

Barring a surprise, he'll be treated as a Dem, just like Bernie Sanders.

He'll technically be a dem (although when you run as an independant, I don't believe you should be allowed to caucus with the party). He'll vote as he votes, but I think he'll be alot more his own man. I think he realizes that the party needs him more than he needs the party.
The problem with having an open mind is that people keep trying to put things in it.

Caucusing is only for purposes of deciding on leadership.

When the leader is chosen, everyone gets a vote ... and it'd be 51-49 in favor of the new President Pro Tempore of the Senate. (OR 50-50, with Cheney breaking the tie.)

So really, it's in both Lieberman's interest and the Dems' interest for him to caucus with them. And since caucusing is informal, and not really a Senate activity, saying he shouldn't be "allowed" doesn't make any sense. It's like saying he shouldn't be allowed in the Democratic cloak room, or to have lunch with the Democrats.

The exit polls on Tuesday night were showing that about 25% of his votes came from Republicans, so without their support, Lamont would have won easily. He has said all along that he will be a Dem in everything but name, and that he will give nothing to the Republicans, but it will sure be tempting when they come calling and reminding him of how he won that seat.

The only sensible thing for Lieberman to do is to reaffirm his democratic roots and vote accordingly.

Why can't he just switch back to being a Democrat? Jim Jeffords switched from a Republican to an Independent.

Maybe he will, but I'm hoping he sticks it out as an independent and brings others along with him. Wouldn't it be great to have a third party? That would help keep the other two honest. Relatively honest. As honest as we can hope for them to be. Oh the hell with it.

I'd like to have a four-party system. What a lot of fun coalitions (with the requesite back-stabbing) we'd get to watch!

Actually, that's about the worst thing he can do.

Don't forget, being a Senator is also about bringing home the pork. He is now in a unique position to get what he wants - from either side, depending on the issue.
