Democratic State Strategies

Although Ohio only turned over one House and one Senate seat, Democrats had a very astute strategy to get their voters out to the polls here. They got issues and constitutional amendments on the ballot that largely appealed to more left of center voters, like:

Issue 2 - Raising minimum wage (this is the stupidest thing I have ever seen.. a constitutional amendment that guarantees inflation by law) - I can't believe it passed.

Issue 3 - A 'gambling for the schools' amendment to allow slot machines in the state and 'guaranteed' ALL the money would go to education. Anyone remember the lottery? Governemnt should not be running the numbers rackets, and we fell for that education bit once before. Fool me once, shame on you. Luckily it failed.

Issues 4 & 5 - Both supposedly anti-smoking.. 4 was a constitutional amendment that was crafted by tobacco companies and still allowed smoking in some public places. 5 was state crafted and bans smoking anywhere in public places.. I would assume it means indoor, but I voted against both. Unfortunately 5 passed.

Anyone else's state have similar initiatives?

We had several measures designed to bring out the rightist vote (we didn't have much on the ballot that I would say was designed to bring out a leftist vote).

1. We passed a measure to restrict the use of Eminent Domain to avoid condemnation of private property to give to other private interests.

2. We rejected a restriction on candidates for the Oregon Supreme Court based on geographic districts. This was designed to broaden the court, currently occupied by liberal judges from the urban centers.

3. Rejected a change allowing Federal Tax Credit on Oregon Taxes that would have put more money in peoples pockes but probably would have been taken out of school and safety budgets.

4. Rejected parental notification for abortions for girls aged 15-17.

5. A term limits requirement for the Oregon State legislature was defeated.

6. Rejected a state spending cap indexed to inflation and population growth similar to TABOR in Colorado.

And how did Oregon go? Did Dems increase seats in either house?

All the incumbents won (1 senate seat and five house members, all but one are Democrats).

In the Oregon State Legislature, every incumbent won except for three seats that flipped, all to Democrats. However, those areas were all liberal areas of the state.

Democrat and Republican makes a lot less difference on the state level. I voted for a Dem governor this year.

By the way, all.. Ken Blackwell, the GOP gubernatorial candidate go SMOKED. As it should have been.

We had an amendment on the ballot to keep liquor stores open on election day. I am sure that drew a lot of Democrat voters.

There is a line we cross when we go from "I will believe it when I see it" to "I will see it when I believe it".

A drug scandal, eh? Well, its those ethical problems that kill the Republicans every time. I think what he smokes in the privacy of his house is his own business.
