Oh sure....Now step down......Great timing.

You've got to laugh. Otherwise you start shaking in unbridled fury and feel a welling deep in your soul of a million voices crying out for the death and dismemberment of your enemies. But a good chuckle helps get rid of all of that.
The problem with having an open mind is that people keep trying to put things in it.

WASHINGTON Nov 8, 2006 (AP)— Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, architect of an unpopular war in Iraq, intends to resign after six stormy years at the Pentagon, Republican officials said Wednesday.

Word came a day after the Democratic gains in the election, in which Rumsfeld was a focus of much of the criticism of the Iraq war. Officials said Robert Gates, former head of the CIA, would replace Rumsfeld.

Earlier today, a spokesman for Rumsfeld said he'd given no indication that he would step down in the wake of Democratic election gains. The spokesman said Rumsfeld would work with Congress on Iraq but added that the focus on stabilizing the country will remain the same.

In the days leading up to the election, President Bush said he wanted Rumsfeld to stay on as defense chief until the end of Bush's second term.

I'm utterly astounded. But I guess it gives W the opportunity to adopt a new strategy somewhat more gracefully, without Rummy having to admit that the old one was an abject failure.

Pres. Bush appointed Bob Gates to take over for Rummy. Pres. Bush is speaking right now.

If I heard right, Bob Gates is a member of the panel headed by James Baker. This would indicate the new SOD is going to be very hands on in implementing some or all of the Baker recommendations (whatever they are!).

Bush sounds really angry. Not contrite, angry.

I think it is a smart move to get this out of the way now, since it was going to be a stumbling block anyway. It removes one obstacle to progress now that the Dems have both houses. I'm pretty sure they'd come for his head on a pike anyway, so it's better to do it without as much appearance of being forced to.

yes, the strategy of innoculation. preempt your opponent's next move by doing it yourself on your own terms.

The only prediction I made last night was that James Carville looked ill. Way to go JohnNYC, I read your post and didn't think anything of it, until about 30 minutes ago. You should be in politics.

Fascinating stuff.

I am going to eat my breakfast. Nobody knows where. Nobody knows when. It will happen within these four walls. It is unknowable how long this breakfast will last, and it is unknowable how many raisins will be in the bran. There could be six. There could be sixty. One thing is for sure, there will be raisins, and there will be bran.

Knocked me over.

What has not been mentioned is that Bush interviewed Rumsfeld's replacement last weekend, so that this was definitely a pre-election move.

Rumsfeld was a disaster. He didn't wage a war on Terror, he waged a war to CREATE terror.

We need to quietly slip out of Iraq ASAP and let those nice people get on with butchering each other. We are in the middle of a 1500 year old war between those folks that will go in for a thousand years to come.

The entire country isn't worth one more American life or one more American dollar.
