Where does such confidence come from?

From the belief that if Bush was going to dump Rumsfeld, it would have been politically prudent to do so earlier in the campaign. If you are going to fire him the day after the election, there is little long term political benefit in that.

Apparently, W either disagrees with you, or doesn't care about long-term political benefit in this instance, eh?

I think it was timed to blunt the newscycle, and to take some thunder away from the Dems..."ok, you won, here's a new SecDef, now what are you going to do?"

But no...if I was going to drop Rummy, it would have been in the middle of the Foley mess...
