If anyone has read anything by Steve Martin, you will know that his writings are far from the "excuuuuse me" arrow through the head comedian. His books are introspective, funny, deep, sweet and kind. Last year, I read "Shopgirl," the story of a girl who works at the glove counter of a department store who is taken with an older man. It was a real "chick book," and I enjoyed it.

I just watched the movie adaptation of it, and was amazed at how it followed the book, how it conveyed the sense of joy and loss that the book did, and how intelligent it was. Clare Danes was beautiful, not physically, but in her character. Steve Martin was charming, in an almost sinister way, and Jason Schwartzman was delightful.

This is a perfect date movie. Read the book and then see the movie. They dovetail with each other, and I was hard pressed to say which one I liked better.

Nothing is as effective as homeopathy.

I'd rather listen to an hour of Abba than an hour of The Beatles.

1) To Netflix - a new verb. Well done, IT!
2) Yeah, I'm a chick. It helps me attract chicks. (Where's Crash...?)

HOLY CARP!!!
I saw it a few weeks ago and thought it was interesting for how realistic it was if nothing else. I was also surprised that it wasn't considered misogynistic by many.

(Spoilers follow...)

The basic outline of the story is completely believable but a long way from the fantasy that hollywood usually tries to peddle. Beautiful young girl is pursued by young loser and old rich guy. Old rich guy doesn't appear to be attractive in any way other than his success and money. Girl is turned on by old rich guy. Girl falls in love with old rich guy. Old rich guy uses her for sex and eventually dumps her. Girl is broken hearted. Girl meets young loser again and sees that he's less of a loser. Girl's interest piques and girl falls for him finally. Meanwhile young loser gets laid by another beautiful girl because other girl thinks he's the rich boyfriend of young girl who she's competitive with.

That's pretty much how life works as far as I can tell but you never see it laid out in such simple terms in movies...
As a good person, I implore you to do as I, a good person, do. Be good. Do NOT be bad. If you see bad, end bad. End it in yourself, and end it in others. By any means necessary, the good must conquer the bad. Good people know this. Do you know this? Are you good?

I think what I liked about the book, and the movie, was the smallness of it. No big scenes, no great wide shots, just a small little book/film about pretty ordinary people.

He was not '"excuuuuse me" arrow through the head comedian' in Leap of Faith (highly recommended)
