Cancer Killing Virus South Korean scientists have said they have developed a new genetically altered strain of virus which is highly efficient in targeting and killing cancer cells. The new therapy developed by the team from Yonsei University uses a genetically-engineered form of the adenovirus, which normally causes colds. The adenovirus was implanted with a human gene that is related to the production of relaxin, a hormone associated with pregnancy. When injected into cancerous tumors, the virus quickly multiplies in the cancer cells and kills them, the team said. The new adenovirus can target only cancer cells and does not harm normal cells, the team said. Existing viral treatments fail to kill off all the cancerous cells. "I believe we have found a way to overcome one of the great obstacles to finding a genetically altered viral cure for cancer," Yun Chae-Ok, one of the researchers, told AFP on Thursday. Following three rounds of injections, more than 90 percent of cancer cells in the brains, liver, lungs and womb of mice disappeared within 60 days, the team said. Clinical tests will be carried out early next year and last 18 months, Yun said. The research results were published in the October 18 edition of the prestigious bimonthly Journal of the National Cancer Institute in the United States. |

I hear it will be produced in the old Young Chang factory, and because of that one of its major drawbacks will be that it causes your legs to fill up with foam...... oh - and your ribs will begin to slowly and constantly expand, causing all your internal parts to get out of alignment and never fit.... |

I do not understand the responses so far. I find this to be extremely exciting news. Good for the South Koreans! They are also making some kick ass automobiles! |

actually the south koreans have a VERY bad reputation in medical research... S Korea cloning research was fake Dr Hwang has been hailed as a hero in South Korea Research by South Korea's top human cloning scientist - hailed as a breakthrough earlier this year - was fabricated, colleagues have concluded. A Seoul National University panel said the research by world-renowned Hwang Woo-suk was "intentionally fabricated", and he would be disciplined. Dr Hwang said he would resign, but he did not admit his research was faked. "I sincerely apologise to the people for creating shock and disappointment," he said after the panel's announcement. "As a symbol of apology, I step down as professor of Seoul National University." |

Ok, so I took a cheap shot. Getting serious, I agree it's great news. As for their autos, I'm still leery. Are they really getting better? |

I hold off having a serious opinion about medical research because I don't know anything about it. If it only had AWD. *snort* It's probably worth (I guess) 24k but the very small Hyundai in MP's post is very interesting- |

I have a very steep driveway going to my place in Wisconsin. The winter after we bought it, we had a serious snow, and I went down the drive in my Honda Prelude. Sideways. I was unable to get back up the hill. Never again. Unlike many, I *need* AWD or 4WD for this place. |

I have AWD. It's a 50/50 mechanical differential (not sure if that's the right way to describe it but I think so). It's great. I don't need it but I like it a lot. |

Daniel, you live in Hawaii, don't you? What the heck are you doing with AWD? |
| The problem with having an open mind is that people keep trying to put things in it. | |

You made it up? You tell us about going through an earthquake, when things you've said cast doubt on your living in Hawaii you explained it away, and now you tell us, after having created a persona that you've presented as a legitimate person, you tell us it is based on lies? |

Larry, I was joking. It's just that it's an unusual place to live and you have answer questions about it if you're going to mention it at all and apparently I should be more patient. Sorry. Daniel |
