Some have been arguing/debating for 5 (7?) years. Does it ever get old? What do you get out of it? Just wondering.

I'd like to think I'm interested in pursuing truth, justice and integrity in our political leadership, and that what I was raised to understand as being traditional American values and principles are worth fighting for.

Public discourse is what this country was founded on.

1) I don't forget why i think what i think, which is something tremendously important in my view

2) In debates you often come across invincible ignorance but in the failing attempts to overcome this you approach the problems from multiple angles. This serves to sharpen your understanding of the issue.

3) Occasionally you provoke some thoughts in your opponents, or your opponents provoke some thought in you, that lead to (usually minor) changes in view point.

Moonbat,

Thanks for contributing to the board. I always find pretty good insight from your arguments, as well as Quirt's.
The problem with having an open mind is that people keep trying to put things in it.

Many would disagree with your idea of who suffers from invincible ignorance, however.

Then why did you vote for Clinton/Gore?

I will admit that at one time I spent an inordinate amount of time on the net (back when it was all kind of new to me) and I felt I needed to argue every issue I had an opinion on. Somehow I thought (based on nothing, really) it would all lead to some kind of resolution.

But then I realized there never would be resolutions and it did 'get old'. I realized I wasn't getting something out of it, other people weren't getting something out of it, and I wondered why was I spending so much time doing it. So I curtailed tremendously. Yes I've allowed myself since to get drawn into pissing contests now and again, but I've been able to pretty much limit that.

As to why others would go a different way, I'm sure various noble rationales can be invented but I'll be interested if anyone has the insight to truly self-examine.

HOLY CARP!!!
This is fascinating to me.

I too used to spend a lot more energy "getting people to see the light".
Now I just come from a place of, this is how I feel.
Others can take it or leave it.
What else is there?

Besides, there are 6 Billion "lights" to see, not one.

I really think we argue more to affect ourselves than others.
We need to assure ourselves of stuff.

Nobody argues over whether the sky is up and the ground is down.
That is for sure.

We only argue about stuff that is not for sure, but we want it to be for sure.

That would be a huge assumption on your part. Where did I ever say I voted for them?

Me too.

I used to get into all sorts of fights with lefties--I mean ALL OF THE TIME. Now I kind of like most of them--we are all getting old together.

For example, I used to fight with kenny--and he with me--not so much any more, now I quote the guy agreeing with him on things.

My answer would be yes.

I take part in fewer and fewer argumentative threads, and I've only been hanging out with this crew about 2 years.

If I see a thread with 6-8 pages, I usually don't even open it.
In my defense, I was left unsupervised.
