Sure, we got rid of the bad guy.
Now they are free.

But seriously, I would love to take a poll over there now.

What percentage of Iraqis would say they are better off today?

Are you implying that there are multiple possible statistics, so whichever one most people here in TNCR want to choose will be the winner?

No.

This is a poll of that TNCRrs think.

What % or Iraqis feel they are better off today than under Saddam.

What is your guess?

It's late, so I'm not about to take the time to find it, but not too long ago I read an article on this very thing, and according to the article some 70% of Iraqis said they were better of now than they were under Saddam.

Did they interview the 650,000 that have died as a result of the American invasion?

(Of course, to be fair, the ones Saddam knocked off ain't too happy either.)

What 650,000 would that be?

Oh - you mean the estimated 650,000 with a margin of error between 20 and 1200%?.....

I think common sense should tell us that the 650,000 is almost certainly a fairly gross over-estimate, with the type of tactics both sides are employing. If Baghdad resembled 1945 Dresden, then it would make more sense, but it doesn't IMO.

Of course, that shouldn't detract from the fact that there's a large number of innocent people getting killed over there, and it's going up all the time.

Does that correspond to the 60% of Iraqis who think violence against American troops is appropriate?

Yes...I believe that the United Way or UNICEF estimated that 30,000 people died per month in iraq from causes attibuted to Saddam's rule. The aggregate is certainly higher than those that died as a result of the ivasion/occupation.

No, the study saying that 60% of Iraqis think violence against American troops is appropriate corresponds with the equally ridiculous 650,000 study.

Oh, I get it. Polls are only believable if they say what you already believe. How very scientific of you.

The 650K number is subject to a lot of assumptions and debate, and I can understand disagreeing with that, even if you have a political bias to do so. But a poll's a poll. To cite one and reject another in the same breath, without any analysis as to why one is valid and the other isn't, is evidence of a closed mind. A poll can be invalid, certainly. It can ask biased questions; the method of selection of who is questioned can be challenged. But you aren't bothering to do any of that, you're just rejecting it because you disagree with it.

No, I'm rejecting it because other polls have shown its results to be just as suspect as the 650,000 study. You're accepting it because it agrees with *your* biases.

Um, there are a lot of innocent people killed every day the world over. Sure Iraq might be a little more dangerous right now than most, but something has to take that title.

The violent death rate in Washington DC is almost as high as it is in Iraq. :ph43r:

Quote 'em.

As far as I know, the 60% number comes from the most recent poll on the subject.

But if you have others that are not outdated, quote 'em and cite 'em.

At the risk of stating the obvious, you're comparing apples and oranges. Washington is a city, Iraq is a country. There are parts of Iraq with very little violence, and parts where the violence is magnitudes greater than anything anywhere in the US. That's what normally happens in war - relatively small areas of very high levels of violence.

Are you implying that US troops killed the 650,000, or were responsible for the deaths? 'Coz from where I sit it looks like the Iraqis are killing each other. If worst comes to worst and, say, the Democratic party takes over and were to immediately remove all US troops from Iraq, do you think:

(a) That all violence will stop.
(b) The situation won't change.
© The situation will get worse.

My opinion is (b) or ©
