I've been thinking about different fields in music that I'd do well in, and I'd like to hear some suggestions from people. I know the obvious like performing, composing for stuff, or teaching - but are there any other interesting things one can do as a pianist and composer? |

Unless you're on the verge of signing a contract with a major label.... switch your major to engineering or computer technology....... |

If you'd consider the health services sector, have a look at audiology. |

I go with Larry's suggestion, or at least marry someone that did that. Musicians shouldn't marry musicians unless they enjoy living like college students. |

I know you meant this for Crashtest, but thank you for the suggestion; I'm passing it on to my son, who has to work on some career/education path ideas for school. He had looked at linguistics, as this appeals to his love of language, (including music), but he is also a strong science and math student. Could be an interesting option. Thanks. |

What about money? Crash how important is financial security and stability to you? May I assume you came from an affluent family, Hummers ain't cheap. I'd love to hear some statistics on people 10-years out of school with music degrees. Composing for movies probably pays well but I'd imagine there are two or three competing composers. ![]() I work in engineering for money but really consider myself an artist/musician at heart. It ain't a bad life. It IS possible you will be a rich successful composer/performer. But I think it takes more than talent for this to happen. |

YEA FOR THAT!!!! I married a musician Crash, my two cents...perform and compose...prepare to teach. Exploit interesting alternatives to solo piano performance...for example, if you are a good accompanist, you can support yourself well in the classical field playing for singers and instrumentalists, especially if you teach as well. Never enough good coach/accompanist types. See if there's a ballet company that needs a good repetiteur...ballerinas are way cute

Its brutally heavy on physics and, of course, head and neck anatomy. But there is a long term and acute shortage of audiologists throughout Canada. Linguistics with a physics minor is nevertheless a good undergrad degree to prepare for an MSc. in audiology. |

Thank you for the suggestions. At the moment I am well supported by my family, so I have time to really think about what I want to do as a career path. It's obviously going to involve composing and the piano, these two things are part of who I am. It is just a logistical question of where I will apply them! |
