I need to buy a good, reasonably priced ($50? up? down?) single malt scotch.

What are your favorites?

What is your preference as to peatiness/smokiness?

I've already told you more than I know about scotch... cognac I know, scotch I like and have had, but I am a relative n00b.

I've had McCallan 12 and 18 and liked them, but I'd like to get a wider range of options.

I am partial to the Islays which are more to the smoky/peaty end of the spectrum. In the 50 dollar range these would include Lagavullin, Laphroaig (I have been recently enjoying their Quarter Cask), Caol Ila and one that is not mentioned much but I like, Bunnahabhain.

Deb and John started me on one that is not an Islay and I like a lot, the Balvenie Double Wood. That is the extent of my knowledge so far in my brief foray into double malts.

I am a member of the Scoth Malt Whisky Society (h/t to Horace) but what they carry is more in the 100 to 200 dollar range. They are well worth it, however.

Thanks, JB. I know what you mean about good things being worth it. Most of the cognacs I really love go in that range as well. The plus side of that is that you drink the bottle over a course of months, not minutes.

Balvenie double wood is very nice and good value, about $50 where we are in over-taxes MA. Medium sweet, unlikely to offend anybody.

My own favourites are the peaty ones from Islay - Lagavulin, Laphroaig, but these are a bit weird, people either love them or hate them. I'm a relative n00b, but I'm making up for lost time.

This place is a good resource for reviews:

Whisky magazine

It also has a forum which I've managed to restrain myself posting on.

Edit - Damn, cross posted with JB. I suspect I may be his sockpuppet.

Edit again - Another one I've tried and liked recently but which isn't a single malt is Johnny Walker Green Label. It's a mixture of only malt whiskies, so is called a 'vatted malt' rather than a blend, which contains grain. It's about $50 for a bottle.

Finally
Talisker is very peaty, smoky. Perhaps a bit too much.
For a lighter one, I like Glenfarclas and Glenmorangie. If you go to the older ones, you're looking at $40 and up. Some like Glenkinchie - always struck me as too bland.
However, the best is a 12+ year old Macallan. The 25 year is unbelievable, but also very pricey.

It's funny, I didn't like Macallan that much. It's all down to preference I guess.

My last bottle of Lagavulin 16 lasted less than a week!

I have been nursing a lovely 25 yo single cask I got through SMWS for about four months now and it is still half full. I have another bottle on the way I like this stuff so much. Just an ounce and a half in a snifter and stick your face in it and breathe and it is like you died and went to heaven. Add a bit of water (these single casks run about 120 proof, btw) and it really opens up. I can spend hours savoring it. If I drank a lot I would be bankrupt in short order. Thankfully, my normal scotch consumption is three ounces per evening.

You know, Scotch does not age in the bottle!

You might as well just drink it!

Ahh, but if it is like fine brandy (which I know it is..), you saaaaavor it. One snifter, maybe two in an evening. I go past that I start paying for it. Only one if I have had any wine with dinner.

Oh yes! I am not implying that I drink more than 3 oz (maybe 5 at the most) in one evening which will last several hours savoring the nectar.

But a bottle only has so many 3-5 oz evenings within!

Indeed, it has about 8 of them. But I only have a snort of liquor maybe a month, if that often.

I love it, but it does not love me. Makes it damned near impossible to play the piano, too, even at my meager skill level.
